Essentially I'm trying to stay away from animal based foods so whey protein powder was a no go for me. So instead I bought a soy based protein powder(tastes awful and chalky btw). I heard that whey protein helps with getting rid of stubborn fat. Does anyone know if soy based protein powder does the same?

Protein powders do not have any magical properties. Calorie deficits cause fat loss. Protein powder is only to augment your protein macros if you aren't getting enough through real food. If it fits your calorie intake great, but if you are exceeding your calories thinking it will be the panacea to help you get rid of "stubborn fat" then chances are this will fail.

Protein powders, soy, whey, casein or otherwise, won't help your body to burn fat. They just help you reach your protein goals.

If you don't like the taste of the soy protein you bought, you could try Vega One's All-In-One protein powder. I'm not vegan but I like this one because it comes in a nice berry flavor that I mix with vanilla almond milk. It's pretty good and also has a variety of veggies and fruits in it.

I have heard bad things about soy protein isolate, any type of isolate ingredients really aren't healthy, but I would never reccomend whey as I do not consume animal products as well, but unless you are unable to eat a full meal it's not recommended, at least that's what Rip from the Engine 2 Diet says

Protein is good for you because it contains amino acids which are used to build and regenerate tissue. It has nothing to do with fat loss, stubborn or not.

Fat is burned when your body needs energy but doesn't get enough from food. So it starts burning suplies. The 'stubborn' fat places depend on your genetics, everyone stores fat in different places.

You need to get into caloric deficit. Your body will decide for you where it will get the missing energy from first and where from last.
