Hey dieters,

I was wondering if anyone has ever successfully tried the Ketogenic diet? If so, how was it done, how did you find it she would you recommend it?

I plan on trying out this diet myself and was also wondering if it's possible to be on the ketondiet whilst having protein shakes meal replacements?

Keto is not a diet, it's a lifestyle change, or way of eating but yes it does work. I've been keto for 4 years and lost 80lbs. Also reversed pre-diabetes and a whole range of other niggling health issues. I would encourage you to do some research so you understand how it works.

Here is a calculator to work out your macros (which you can change under "goals" in MFP). https://www.ruled.me/keto-calculator/

it works like any other diet, you eat less than you burn and you lose fat. However, many people find it very difficult to give up all carbs, and there are downsides. Athletic performance is sub-optimal, many people feel crappy and lethargic. It is a rather extreme dietary change for most people.

Technically, keto is a diet, as diet is defined as "the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats."

Having said that... does keto work? Potentially. If it allows you to restrict calories below your maintenance levels, then yes, it will work. It's highly beneficial for those with PCOS/IR/Diabetes. If you do keto, make sure you have high sodium (3000-5000mg) and realize it's high fat, moderate protein. So you can have a protein shake (ideally, you would aim for around .8-1g of pro per lb of lean body mass if you are hoping to sustain your muscle mass). I know there is some fear of getting kicked out of ketosis, but I haven't seen any actual data to support at what level that would occur.
