weight loss is not a linear process - i.e. I'm going to lose x lbs every week - you may go up, you may go down - I know its hard to not focus on the number, but treat it like a piece of data that influences your overall healthdeannalfisher wrote: »SherriB1983 wrote: »I also weigh everyday. I've held on to weight for 10 days straight and then lost 2 pounds in 24 hours. Weight loss is not linear and you shouldn't expect the scale to go down every day. Also, everyone is different. Some people lose a little at a time. Some people (like me) lose in chunks.
Honestly, there's nothing wrong with weighing yourself every day as long as you have REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS about what you're going to see. A helpful tool is a weight-trend tracking app (say that 3 times fast). I use Trendweight.com. It takes your daily weight fluctuations and smooths them out into a line. Here's mine as an example:
As you can see, the scale goes up and down a lot! But, the overall line shows my weight steadily dropping. Hope this helps!
Thanks for sharing this. I like this chart a lot!0 -
Weighing every day taught me about fluctuations so I don't panic if the scale moves the wrong direction. It just works better for me. My weight range every day is about 4lb fluctuation depending on time of day and diet the day before. Knowing this and tracking trends gives me a more realistic and complete view of my progress.1

I weigh every day. Mostly because the scale is in a really convenient area and it has become a habit. I use the bathroom in the morning -- hop on the scale. Brush my teeth at night -- hop on the scale. I usually keep one day out of the week for my official weigh-in.
Things I've noticed: my weight is sometimes 2-3 pounds lighter in the morning than in the evening. Also, I have irregular periods and the scale has kind of helped me to predict when it is going to start -- My weight is heavier than normal, even in the mornings.

I weight everyday... It keeps me motivated and on track and accountable!1

Ahhhh!!!! I do the same thing. Always weighing. Sometimes I will go 8 days with no progress but then jump down four pounds. As long as you are averaging a weight loss and you know you aren't doing anything crazy like eating a tons of bad foods and not burning any calories don't ever worry. You will see a drop.1

I weigh every day but am obsessed - God only knows why as my weight is the same despite my lifestyle and diet changes0

another vote for daily weighing and using a trending app to track fluctuations. also, +1,000 for weight loss not being linear. TOM and salt will cause me to spike up by 3-5 pounds sometimes. and i tend to only see a new lowest weight about once per month at this point, i would be going crazy if i didn't have a trend to look at which shows me that this months heavy days were January's lightest days.2

I weigh every day.
Here's some recent up/down weight loss I've experienced (daily):
156.0
155.6
156.8
156.2
155.4
155.2
154.2
155.0
155.0
154.8
153.8
Hope that helps give an idea. Of course it is discouraging to go from 155.6 to 156.8 the next day, but as long as the general trend is downward, it's all good.4 -
I weigh everyday and its really helped me accept that weight loss is not linear but it is possible. My weight loss shows about every 4 to 5 weeks. On the 4th week I will lose about 3-4 pounds over the course of a few days. I am set to lose about a pound per week but like I say it shows after about 4 weeks.2

I don't know who came up with a rule that you shouldn't weigh everyday.
To explain where it came from, this is the note on the right hand side of the check in screen where you would enter your weight.
"Check In
To help track your progress, you should record your weight periodically. We suggest once a week because your weight fluctuates daily due to uncontrollable factors like water. Try to always weigh yourself at the same time of day - we suggest early in the morning before breakfast."
Seems another spot where the MFP web site and forum opinion diverge.

Weight loss isn't Linear some days I gain weight, and other days I lose it, and other days my weight stays the same.
Since I'm not counting calories I do weigh myself everyday to determine what the impact of the previous days food was. Whenever I have a sodium laden day my weight increases. This I've realized I have to keep control of sodium levels.

End of the week? Why would that happen LOL??!!
I weigh every day. Some days it goes up, some days it goes down. But it goes down more often. Usually it's a small swing up or down, but I have seen a pound or more, while trying to lose. When not trying to lose, I have seen as much as a 3 pound drop or gain, in one day.
You will always have daily fluctuations. That's normal.0 -
I weigh myself daily as well. I have only been on the weight loss train for 12 days so I don't know how helpful this is. But in those 12 days I've lost 6.5 lbs. some days I lost, some days I actually gained and some days I stayed the exact same. So like most people here it zig zags but the overall trend is down.0

I weigh every day and have for years. I bought the PC version of Fitday because over the years, our internet was spotty. I have all my favorites entered in folders, and it not only gives me a weekly average, but also it projects my future weight.
I just recently discovered Libra and now I have two to play with. I also like the Hackers Diet free spreadsheets.
But I am a math geek. I tutored Financial Calculus at a Community College for 15 years along with running the math computer lab.0 -
Just started weighing daily and using Libra. More curious about what my trends will be.0

Daily weigher here. Started this diet Dec 26th. Yesterday was my lowest weight so far, but it took 25 days to get to this new low. Then lower today. So you pay a price by watching daily if you can't handle seeing long periods like this, which happens the closer you get to your goal. But I love the data.0

^^^^ This is what happens to me too except it's Sat am when the drop comes. Get 4-6 day stable weight and then down a lb or 2! Couldn't stand not knowing. I am away from home since Weds and am dying to get home tomorrow to see where I am Monday morning. Need data input!0 -
I also prefer to weigh myself everyday. I find it makes me much less anxious because there isn't a build up to getting weighed. It also allows me to understand fluctuations.2

I weighed daily for 3 months. My weight fluctuated up and down, but steadily went down. If I had a lot of sodium, I saw that on the scale the next day. I stopped weighing daily once the process stopped being educational for me. After 4 months, I feel like I know when it is going to say something I like and when it isn't. I weigh once every two weeks now.1

Mine can fluctuate by 3 pounds either way (more during that time of the month). It's so gradual if I didn't chart it I would think I wasn't losing weight. Normally the fluctuations are within a pound unless I have extra salt the night before or if my exercise was unusually vigorous the day before. I look at my weight loss on a weekly or monthly comparison to avoid getting discouraged.
It helps to know that it's not only impossible to lose a pound of fat in 24 hours, but it's highly improbable you can gain a pound of fat since it takes a whole 3500 calories.0
