Sorry... I have to share my calorie savings story!
I went to the store to buy Light Super Bowl food (+ regular)
I bought:
Light Ruffle chips: 80 calories for 15 chips (compared to Baked Ruffles 120 cal for 9 AND Regular Ruffles @ 160 cals for 9)
Stubbs BBQ Sauce: 30 calories for 2 tbsp (compared to Kraft, KC Master Piece, Jack Daniels etc at minimum of 60 calories for 2 tbsp) -one was 70 but I can't remember the name-
Fruit Loops: 110 calories for 1 cup (compared to Safeway's cereal in the economy bulk bag 130 calories for 1 cup)
Morning Star Corn dogs: 150 cals per corn dog (compared to Foster Farms 180 cals & no name/ many other named @ 210 - 240 Calories)
I havent figured out the difference between the dips. I was going to buy a pre-made ranch dip... instead I bought Tillamook fat free sour cream, will mix nonfat milk and 1 packet of Hidden Valley Ranch Buttermilk receipe mix. (has to be a big difference right?!?)
I wanted to find the Reduced fat Hillshire Farms lil'l smokies but couldn't find them so! ... I compared just the lil smokies and the beef lil smokies and ... ( I think... the difference was 10 calories per serving)
YAY!!:bigsmile: I feel like I accomplished something... achieved something... I dont know I just feel Proud... this is my "What have I done today to make myself feel proud" entry. :drinker: :bigsmile:

I'm into reading labels and comparing. My grocery shopping trips can be quite long unless I already know what I'm getting or I am just buying fruit and veggies. :laugh: :flowerforyou:0

Me too! That is why I left the bf at home! lol :laugh:0 -
I'm with you! I love comparing labels, especially when I find something--like your chips--where what would seemingly be the best choice isn't necessarily. I did that with pre-made pizza sauce, and found that with all the "fancy" brands available, the store version was lowest in calories and sugar. And to top it all off, it had the shortest list of ingredients, and I could actually pronounce all of them!
Enjoy your Super Bowl goodies!0 -
Do any of you have comparisons that you want to share with everyone??0

I love doing that too!!!0

Good for you for reading labels. I started reading labels when I started my lifestyle change last year. That was an eye opener! Now not only do I feel healthier but I also feel smarter. :bigsmile:0

What gets me is when I compare the stuff in the "Nature's Market" section with that in the regular. Normally I just grab all the best regular items and drag them over to the Nature section, then ditch whichever loses.0

I can't think of anything super specific right now...but, if I remember correctly, the Contadina Pizza squeeze brand had a lot more sugar (from high fructose corn syrup none the less), thus more calories. I bought Kroger brand and it's pretty tasty.
One thing I have found that, in general, is when the label says fat-free, the manufacturer has compensated for that by adding more sugar. It's really frustrating for me...I have a strong family history of diabetes, so one of my biggest concerns is not eating low quality carbs and too much sugar. When I read labels it seems like there's HFCS in everything!
Speaking of labels, did any of you happen to see Dr. Oz on Oprah's "Live Your Best Life" series, first part of January? He had a list of five ingredients to avoid--and especially if they are in the first five ingredients listed.
* high fructose corn syrup
* sugar
* trans fat or anything that says "hydrogenated"
* saturated fats
* "enriched" anything (he said that basically means that they have stripped everything that's good for you out, and then added nutrients back in)
I found the "enriched" one to be the most surprising--I'm pretty sure that anyone who hasn't had their head in the sand for the last couple of years knows about the others, but ENRICHED? I always thought that meant it was better for you!
