Anyone else just walk for exercise? I'm thinking of getting a bike. What do you reckon is a bike ride better than a walk, any opinions?

i'm so out of shape i'm going to have to start walking. switching to a bike would help break the monotony.

Bikes are good, but check out your rec center. Swimming is great with low impact on joints. And if you dont swim, you can walk the pool- many do just that.

My pool has free classes one is light exercises in the shallow end and one is deep end water arobics. Ive met some amazing ladies on the same journey as me there.

I started walking and gradually moved on to running. I bought a bike for two reasons 1) I wanted something I could take to the store or brew pub and get some exercise. 2) In the summer heat & humidity riding gives me a nice breeze to help manage the heat. I ended up getting pannier bags that unfold so I can carry many items like one time I rode to the store and bought two bags of ice. I also for fathers day received a stainless steel insulated beer growler with a bike mount. I get a lot of comments on that one. The unexpected thing was it made me feel like a kid again. I had forgotten how much fun riding a bike can be.

I've been eye balling fat tire bikes. I live in the land of 7 months of snow - so I think I could probably get use out of it year round if I put my mind to it.

    I walk - and I'm a wannabe runner.

I feel like I've lost enough weight to start running. I ran today on my first day of couch to 5K. On/off running for 1.5 miles!! A lot of running, a lot of huffing and puffing, a lot of "I'm gonna heave"..but I did it

Biking is great if you are able for it, go ahead and become a MAMIL (Middle Aged Men In Lycra). I got an exercise bike and use it most days, too rainy here (Ireland) and too many hills in my area. So swimming & spinning (hate that term) are my go to exercises. I struggle at both (for now) which makes the hard work for me but I reckon that's a sign that its burning calories at least.Running can be sevre on the joints as you age, especially if carrying extra weight ""Every pound of excess weight exerts about 4 pounds of extra pressure on the knees. So a person who is 10 pounds overweight has 40 pounds of extra pressure on his knees; if a person is 100 pounds overweight, that is 400 pounds of extra pressure on his knees."" http://www.arthritis.org/living-with-arthritis/comorbidities/obesity-arthritis/fat-and-arthritis.php . This is important if you have a touch of arthritis.
