Runners or anyone who has had knee issues

Hey guys!

I am redoing Couch to 5K for the second time, and I just finished Week 2. I also had this same issue towards the end of C25k when I did it the first time.

I've noticed in the last couple of days (more noticeably on run days and the day after) that my right knee feels funny. It doesn't really hurt, but it kind of feels stiff, sort of like when you need to pop it. On the day after a run, it's sort of achy, especially if going up/down stairs. But by the next day, it's fine, but then it is usually time to run again.

Anyone have this same issue or something similar? I'm not sure if I need to go to the doctor about it. I thought it might be my shoes but the pair I have are only about 6 months old. Any ideas?

I have Knee issues too! I am training for my first half marathon and my knees seem to be doing good!..if your knees feel funny, I'd ice them..even for a few minutes after your run..and you may need new shoes..because it is very important to have good cushioning! I keep my running shoes only for running so they last longer and use my older ones for working out at the gym/DVD's/any other use! My running shoes don't last long. But it depends how often you run! Good Luck!

Have you tried icing and heating it? When my knee starts to act up, this what I do and it feels great though I had to stop C25K cause it became painful. I was trying to run on too many days.

I have knee issues and am training for a marathon. Put your hand on your kneecap...then bend and straighten it....does it fell "poppy" when you do? If so you may have issues with the tissues under your kneecap....it's not getting a smooth ride. Work on strengthing your outer and inner quads by squeezing a ball between your legs and do some squats to strengthen the outer muscles. If there is pain while you run you could try a knee band for runners knee. I suggest some IB and ice after you run to help ease swelling.

As for your shoes it's really dependent on how many miles there are on them...look at the soles...are they worn down?

Thank you for the tips! I don't notice a "poppy" feeling when I bend and straighten my kneecap, so I guess that is good. My shoes are almost brand new..there is maybe 10-15 miles on them. I'll try icing and ibuprofen, and then maybe a knee band if it continues.

I see my chiropractor religiously every week to keep everything aligned, including & especially my knees. Good luck to you!

Also, I used to have some shin and knee issues, but I started making sure I really stretched well after stretching, especially my IT band (down the side of my hip). If my IT band gets tight it pulls on my knee. But since I've started really stretching everything well (like 10 minutes of stretching after a run), I haven't had any pain anywhere!
  • Make sure you are stretching a TON and ice might help as well!

Getting the proper shoes fixed this for me. Good luck! I finished C25K a little over a month ago - totally worth it!!
  • Great ideas everyone, thank you!!
