HELP - foot pain & need exercises to do in meantime...

OK so I'm in the middle of this competition at work and doing really good! AND now I've somehow injured my right foot, in the arch area and up a little above the arch. I went to the doctor and there is no fracture or anything (good thing), but I still have terrible pain in the foot. I was feeling better last night after icing it and having it wrapped all day so I decided to go on my elliptical machine and try to just do a light exercise instead of my more extreme one's at higher resistance. ANYWAY...I only could go 20 minutes which is not a lot considering I usually do longer and higher resistance - and I had to get off. THEN my foot was throbbing, I could barely make it upstairs to my bedroom afterwards. I iced it again, but it really hurt all night. TODAY it feels better again - but I know not to exercise tonight on the elliptical.
SO my questions is what can I do that doesn't involve my foot for exercise??? I can't NOT exercise I need to keep burning those calories!!! DANG IT why couldn't it of been my arm hurt instead of my stupid foot!!!
P.S. If anyone can recommend some good sneakers with good arch support that would be great too! Gonna go buy new shoes and hopefully that will help in the future.

Sounds like Plantar Fascitis (sp?). I got it after a half marathon/Disney trip. You just have to take it easy, stretch it, ice it, get insoles. Go easy on it. spinning is great as long as the resistance isn't too high. You may need to stay in the saddle until it eases up. It SUCKS. I'm sorry!0

Stretch it, check the fit of your shoes (too tight is a BAD thing), ice it, ibuprofen, and if it worsens, see a podiatrist.
I wear a night cast for plantar fasciitis. It sucks, but it works.0 -
oh so many you can do,,,,,boxing, swimming, lifting wts, push up (knee types) ab work outs, some pilates, some yoga, chair dancing...Richard Simmons even has an aerobic dvd for people in wheel chairs...

I just got to the point where i can work out again PLANTAR FASCIITIS same pain as u describe, go to ebay and buy a night splint for PF and i am sure it will work, i tried everything icing it rolling my foot on golf balls. this splint has 3 vellcro straps the plastic is black and the inner cushion is blue it cost me about $25.00. it will allow your foot to heal keeping it one position through out the night. It will also work for other injuries as well.
Also i got the custom Dr Scholls inserts for about $50 and have good running shoes, i think the whole thing happened because of those reebok zigtech sneakers so stay away from them.0 -

I was going to say the same thing, Plantar fasciitis. This type of foot pain and inflammation has everything to do with you calf muscles. Google Plantar fasciitis. find some good calf stretches and shin stretches. That should move the healing along. Don't get any crazy arch supports. light weight shoes and insoles that aren't crazy will help.0 -

a lot of people are saying swim. If you can handle it, then that's good. But swimming is known to irritate foot pain. Even though you're not standing on it, those muscles are being used a lot while swimming.0 -

I do have access to a pool so I can try to swim - but I do worry about that too, because you do use your feet a lot so I'm worried that also would hurt it. I guess it's worth a try though!0 -
I have had PF for years. I have been to 2 podiatrists and received 3 cortisone shots, a night split and custom made orthotics. Calf muscle stretching is also a huge help. For me, believe it or not, my exercising has actually helped! I think because I was strengthening my calf and hamstring...Oh, and you gotta have good shoes. My doctor said that you shouldn't be able to bend/twist the shoes, they need to be sturdy. Anyway, that's my experience w/foot pain. I hope yours gets better...It is not fun...0

This is my story. For me it all started with plantar fasciitis. The best cardio exercise for someone with plantar fasciitis is swimming and riding a bicycle. I used to run and I got plantar fasciitis so I started to swim and cycle. Today I’m better with my PF so I ended up as a triathlete. I have finished my first Olympic triathlon race two months ago. It did not all happen in one day - I am talking about 3 years now. From my personal experience I am sure that swimming will never hurt your feet.
There are many things you can do to treat your PF although I understood that treatment efficiency is very individual. If something works for one it will not necessarily work for the other.
I have found taping very useful. Taping will keep your foot from getting injured again and will help you get through your daily routine and exercises.

I'm suffering from plantar fascitis (sp) right now, too. Of course, I had just started c25k and JM 30DS. For the time being I've switched to walking (but have to alternate days), 30DS I do with modified cardio- marching and boxing. I'm going to try biking right now. Although swimming sounds great I've had problems with foot injuries and swimming in the past. The movement of the foot through the water is painful. I'm hoping to build back up to walking and swimming. I'd love to try c25K again, but need to heal.
