I have heard from multiple coaches (in very different sports) that Chocolate milk is one of the best things to have after a workout. Is this true, and if so why? Also, anything else that could be good for you after a workout?

It is a good drink after a work out because it's a good source of healthy protein and carbs.

One of the best things after a CARDIO workout because of the balance of carbs and protein. After a big lifting workout you want something with a lot more protein (typically a supplement).

I read this article the other day on WebMD....I hope it's true because chocolate milk sounds so good right now...haha

  • The reason they say this is because it contains protein, essential fats, sugar (although it is a little on the high side), and a couple other things.

Chocolate milk has the advantage of additional nutrients not found in most traditional sports drinks. Studies suggest that when consumed after exercise, milk's mix of high-quality protein and carbohydrates can help refuel exhausted muscles. The protein in milk helps build lean muscle and recent research suggests it may reduce exercise-induced muscle damage. Milk also provides fluids for rehydration and minerals like calcium, potassium and magnesium that recreational exercisers and elite athletes alike need to replace after strenuous activity.

Completely agree... the amount of sugar in chocolate milk will completely kill your sugar intake for the day! Get some chocolate protein powder, mix it with water and enjoy!

I drink chocolate milk after each of my workouts. You can find ways to cut the sugar as well (ie lower sugar mixins.)

I used to always drink a chocolate milk before my long runs. Tasted good and filled me up a bit. Love chocolate milk!

I honestly have never tracked sugar and haven't had an issue with it. So I'll stick with cheap chocolate milk 99% of the time.

I do enjoy a good protein shake for a meal replacement now and then. But at 350 days and 69lbs down the sugar isn't an issue for me, it may be for others.
  • If you're concerned about the sugar intake, there are alternatives - above posters mentioned chocolate protein shakes. I drink Ovaltine - less than half the sugar of regular chocolate syrup (8g versus 19.4g) and it has a pretty good amount of a lot of vitamins/minerals, in my opinion. It's worth a shot, anyways.

Protein shakes have several calories too. Try Nestles Quick sugar free mix. with your low fat milk.

You're not doing yourself any favours by not having simple sugars after a workout. A high GI carbohydrate transports protein to glycogen depleted muscles after they've been used up during an intense workout. Having a protein shake is a good choice, but taking it without carbs defeats the purpose of having a fast absorbing protein source. Chocolate milk has a 4:1 carb:protein ratio, and is filled with sugar. Granted, the protein content isn't that large, but the ratio is quite good for ensuring fast absorption. Now obviously, this entire concept only applies to intense workouts. Not a good idea to apply this concept after low intensity cardio.

I used to drink 2% then went to1% and finally skim, now if I drink 2% (at a friends) then it tastes like I could use a spoon to eat it. Side note, use low fat chocolate milk.
