Low-Calorie Diaries?!

I did a peek at some people's food diaries, and I was surprised to see that so many people's are below the 1200 calorie mark. I will be a hypocrite and say that yes, even I have been under that mark sometimes but not consistently.

Remember.. this isn't 'My Starvation Pal'. It's 'My Fitness Pal'.

When I google 'define: fitness' I recieve:
1. The condition of being physically fit and healthy.
2. The quality of being suitable to fulfill a particular role or task.

None of these mention starving yourselves to the point where you're eating under 1200 calories per day. 1200 should be the MINIMUM at what you are consuming to be at a healthy, balanced diet. I think many of us - including myself - need a reminder that in order to LOSE weight, we must CONSUME an adequate amount. We don't want our bodies to be going into starvation mode and converting muscle to sugar (typically the first source used); We want our bodies to be burning that unwanted fat instead of storing it.

If you are someone who's restricting carbohydrate intake, (aka High Protein, Low Carb diet) don't be afraid to add some multi-grain bread, oats or fibre into your diet. You can still lose weight! If you're hungry, eat some veggies! I do, and I know I'm losing weight.

If your caloric goal is say, 1400 calories, you could aim for 1300 + your exercise calories. But don't do a crash diet and only consume 800 - 1000 calories. This change is not sustainable for long-term results. Ask yourself if you can actually continue this type of a diet for the rest of your weight loss period. From personal experience (not saying everyone will) I lapsed back into unhealthy eating habits when I ate minimally.

MFP IS SMART. Listen to it!

I have definitely noticed that in my friends diaries too but hesistate to say anything. I am so hungry I always make sure I maximize my daily limit and eat most of them back, so I don't know how so many people can live off of say 900 calories in a day! Thanks for pointing it out

Idk how people eat only 1200 calories a day let alone only 800 calories a day. I struggle to stay below 1950 calories a day.
  • 900 kcal a day is actually enough for me, I don't feel hungry.
I eat more if I'm bored.

or maybe some of us just dont need 1200 calories a day, i actually loose weight best if i stick at 1000-1100 net a day on a day when im up and about from 7-11 if i have a lay in, i only need around 850-950 net a day, because its all my little body with a fat belly needs. that 1200 number is just a blanket number, we are all individuals and individuals have individual needs. :-)

i read in self magazine that if you are aiming to lose weight you should eat around 1600 a day. and i have read many places that eating under 1400 a day is enough to get your body into starvation mode. i was first surprised to see that on this site, many ppl's calorie goal is around 1200 (including my own). i often go over but i don't think thats a bad thing considering what i've read elsewhere.

I am normally under 1200 calories. But I feel like I am eating all day long. I look at it this way... I wasn't an overeater, I had horrible eating habits. I would drink 2-3 cups of coffee throughout the day and then eat crap for dinner. Nothing in between. So now I am eating Breakfast, Morning Snack, Lunch, Afternoon Snack, Dinner and sometimes dessert. I am making healthier choices, but I am still eating under my goal of 1200 calories very often and losing. I don't know, it works for me so far. I'll make adjustments as I go. :o)

As the others said, every one has different needs, not every body is the same. Also, starvation mode is a very controversial topic with research supporting it's truth and falsity. Most agree you would need to eat about 300-600 calories a day for a long period of time to actually do some serious damage to your metabolism. This isn't a place to pick on each other habits, it's a place for support.

My plan had me at 1300 a day and I stopped losing after the second week. I went and saw a nutritionist she bumped me up to 1600-1700 a day minimum and I started losing again almost instantly. I still love MFP, but I changed my calories.

I understand your concern, but you should keep in mind that eveyones bodies are different. There are some people whose doctors have told them they can stay at 800 calories and be fine. I eat between 1000-1200 calories a day. Period. Not eating my exercise calories and I lose weight just fine, feel just fine. And I don't often feel hungry.

While I don't encourage people to eat too little calories I do think they need to figure it out for themselves.

Everyone loses in different ways, and many people who eat under 1200 a day are doing so based on a doctor or nutritionist's recommendation.

A pescatarian is someone who doesn't eat meat but does eat fish & dairy. A lot of people don't bother to call themselves pescatarian & just say they're vegetarian even though they're not so the word pescatarian doesn't get used a lot.

Also, I've known many people life off less than 1,200 calories a day & get along fine. It all depends on your body type. If you're really short & slim, you won't need that many calories. I'm actually really tall & have lived off a few hundred calories a day for a long time because that's what I was comfortable at. I didn't feel the need to eat any extra & that worked fine for me.

Yeah I was going to say - I guess you have to factor in height, weight, previous eating habits, activity level and the fact that BMI is not *the* most accurate tool of measurement. I guess the best thing to do is use your common sense - if you need more calories and are eating the right TYPE of calories, I can't see a problem, the same way if you don't need as many calories and are still eating a healthy, balanced diet.

From the diaries I've seen on here, people tend to use the tool by-and-large appropriately and it's great to see so many people having nutritious diets, no matter how many or few calories they are consuming.
  • well mind your own diary then. i eat until im full and its usually 800 calories or less. im NOT going to eat if im full.

Alright.. so I have sparked a bit of controversy. Just to be clear, I wasn't aiming at slimmer people. I was aiming for people who are trying to lose a large sum of weight, and are just beginning their weight loss diets.

I do agree that everybody IS an individual and have their own caloric needs. I didn't specifically say I was talking about a person who normally ate 3000 calories/day shouldn't go on a crash diet of 800 calories, and I apologize for that.

Sorry if I twinged anyones feelings on here.

I like to eat almost all of my calories (although I have been eating a bit cleaner and have struggled to reach my goals) and my goal is around 1600. I'm also 5'11" though.

Someone who is a lot smaller, I suppose I can understand being under 1200 as long as they are not starving themselves. I would personally be starving!!!

This brings up a good point, that any kind of altering of the diet (i.e., to follow your point about MFP's suggestions and those who normally consume 1400-1600 going down to 800-900 cals a day) will alter the metabolism. This isn't good, and could permanently change their body's inner workings.
Honestly, though, most of us do have those days where we eat just a little and don't need much. Starving is no good, I agree, and knowing a general idea of cals to be eating is totally fine. In fact, you may have enlightened some reader on here who didn't comment.
We are all different, though, that's for sure.

IMO, It's none of my damned business. If I thought they had an ED I'd remove them though. Don't have room for that in my life because it encouraged ED tendencies in the past and screwed up my metabolism.

1200 is a guideline, not a rule. Many people who are, for example, particularly short or small can eat less than this and by perfectly healthy. Additionally, starvation mode only kicks in after an extended period of time, not because you eat less for a few days in a row. It needs to be continuously characteristic of your diet to under-eat.

I'm 5"1. In order to lose a pound per week, I'd need to eat less than that. So for some people it's appropriate, and for others it's not.
  • "7 Facts You should Know Before Having Another Low-Calorie Diary"

    1. RMR or Resting Metabolic Rate is the rate of calories your body burns calories at rest. Not sleep; rest. Meaning while sitting or doing your "usual" daily activities. MFP will base your daily calories off of your RMR based on your height, weight, age, and activities. If you eat the RMR calories, you will not loose or gain weight. You will sustain your current weight.

    2. BMR or Basil Metabolic Rate is similar. The difference is that this is the rate your body burns calories while laying down or sleeping.

It is important not to confuse the two, because you will come up with two different numbers.

    3. Starvation mode is when you consume 50% or less of your RMR. A female of 'healthy' weight is supposed to consume 1200 calories. A male of 'healthy' weight is supposed to consume 1500 calores. So a woman should not eat under 600 calories or you body will start to store fat because it thinks you are starving. Obviously for the males its 750. Now keep in mind that a morbidly obese person is usually required around 2300 calories. So if they eat under 1150, their body will store every drop of fat and calories.

Now starvation mode, and fasting mode are also easily confused.

    4. Fasting mode (a.k.a. crash diet) is when you eat 51-75% of your RMR. So if we based this on the 1200 RMR of a healthy female, that would mean 600-900 calories will result in excessive and fast weight loss. However, after losing weight in fasting mode, as soon as you sart to eat between 1000-1200 calories again you will immediately gain all your weight back, in far less time than it took you to lose it AND probably will weigh more than before you did your 'crash diet'. Fasting mode should only be used at the recommendation of a doctor. Usually this is done to decrease fatty organs (usually the liver) prior to certain surgeries or procedures.

    5. Nutrionally, it is not possible to provide all of the nourishment that your body requires if you are eating in starvation or fasting mode. For those people who swear that the feel good, it is temporary. Eventually it will catch up with you because your are damaging your organs. See the USDA's nutritional guidelines: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/ Formerly http://www.mypyramid.gov/

    6. If you want to lose weight, reduce your calories by 100-150 calories per day until you reach your goal weight and increase your exercise. The key to losing weight is to burn more than you consume in exercise... period. There's no magic pill, that is the only real cure for obesity. Unless of course you are so far gone that your only hope is weight loss surgery. If you are starving yourself to lose weight, then you are trading one eating disorder for another.

    7. Remember you need to burn 3500 calories for every pound you want to lose. So if you want to lose 2 lbs per week and eat your 1200 (ladies) 1500 (men), then you need to burn 7000 calories, so put your running shoes on.

I am super morbidly obese (malignant obesity). I have met with every nutritionist, dietician, doctor, fitness trainer, and surgeon. This information is quite accurate.
