Is the premium that much better then the free version??

Have a close look at the specific features to see if they suit you. For some people, premium has value, for others (like me) it has nothing I want or would use. A lot of people seem to join Premium then complain on the forum that it doesn't do something that they expected it to do - even though MFP never said it did that thing in the first place.
Note that things that are exactly the same for free and Premium are - the forums, the newsfeed, the recipe builder, the blogs, the food and exercise databases.

I'm on premium. The major difference on premium is it provides a breakdown of which foods you have logged and will show you which of the foods had the greatest impact under carbs, fat, protein. Good if you want that level of detail like myself who is tracking macros, otherwise everything else is like free version.
