I'm going to a 4-day music festival in a couple of weeks and am worried about going off track with all the food and booze that will be around me! How do you guys stay healthy in social situations, when everybody else is eating/ drinking junk?

I can't decide whether it's worth keeping it up or should I just give in for those 4 days and then get back on track after? :/

  • I say give in for those 4 days. It's a holiday, a treat, an event you should completely lose yourself in. Enjoy yourself wholeheartedly and consider it a break not just from work, not just for your mind, but also for the nagging voice at the back of your head that tells you what's good for you, what's bad for you.

After those 4 days, let that nagging voice get back to doing its job, fully rested and filled with guilt-inducing enthusiasm. =]

What is it they say everything in moderation. Music festivals I go to have healthy options, also think of all the exercise you will get dancing around.

I went to the Download festival and would have found it pretty hard to keep on track. I didnt eat or drink tons, honestly, but I will say I put on almost 5lbs over the three days which took me nearly two weeks to get rid of. Some of it of course was water retention caused by drinking alcohol and eating high sodium food which is hard to avoid at a festival! It was quite demotivating, though - if you are going to fall off the wagon for a few days, be sure you are strong enough to get back on. I was only just starting on MFP when I went and basically undid all the good work I'd done so far :( It was actually a msg from someone on here who lives on the other side of the world to me which got me back on track. Good Luck:flowerforyou:

I recently went away for 5 days - not to a festival, but to somewhere full of temptations (a week in a sunny place with my mum and best friend) We go away once a year together - we get there, we buy heaps of junk food, we eat out all the time, we drink a fair bit, we sit in a theatre all week (watching a national dance competition).

I decided I would let myself enjoy myself. I still went junk food shopping, I still ate out every meal. I didn't drink (I've sorta stopped because i don't actually enjoy it..) I tried to get the girls to walk from the hotel to the theatre when possible. I just made healthier choices. I didn't partake in all of the snacking.

The funniest thing is, I'd decided to let myself have ANYTHING I wanted whilst I was away. I just didn't want that much c***. I ate icecream, but I didn't eat it until it was gone, I ate it until I'd had enough and threw the rest away. I ordered meals with lots of veg because I actually enjoy them. I snacked.

You may be surprised when you let yourself have whatever you want (instead of saying no and craving it) that you will be sensible and give in a bit, but listen to your body and know when enough's enough. Have fun... how often do you get to go away??

I wouldn't sweat it too much but still keep an idea of how many calories your in taking. If you go over okay but still try to keeping an eye on it. If your going to a music festival then have fun and move around a lot more then you normally do. then you'll need to eat more calories to maintain your metabolism.

    have fun.

I agree, you dont have to completely give up, just count the calories and choose healthy options. if you can sneak in some booze that you know the calories content of because usually at festivals they only have beer and cheap wine. there will be lots of healthy food stalls for you to choose from. dont worry about it and just try and choose the healthier options of what is on offer :D and have fun :D x

perhaps a good idea would be to schedule in some extra activity to follow the big debauchery - make that a fun event you can also look forward to. I have found that even when I do "let myslef go" for special social events (key word here is "special"), I am still aware of my intake. I haven't logged every food item , but forced myself to log in calories from my highest tracked days, just as a reminder that every day os no longer like this...

    Have fun at the festival!!

if you have the app, then use it! imo, its easy to stay on track, if you have the desire....its easy to just say F%& IT...and give in. imo, you have to get in the mindset that your willpower will win.

i still drink and eat some SIN foods...i just plan for them is all.

good luck to you my friend.

I handle these situations by paying attention. Eat your meals, and do your best to eat responsibly. This means providing good quality food to fuel your body, and accepting responsibility for whatever "treats" and "excesses" you may choose.

Keep some snacks handy. Toss some of your favorites into your bag. Use the search for good food as an excuse to try out local restaurants and make sure you order delicious food that you will enjoy. Take pictures of your plate and make awesome food a part of your experience. Don't eat on your feet! Sit down to eat your meals, off a real plate. Take your time with your food and enjoy conversation.

Make it a priority to get your physical activity in, whether that means a morning jog, and afternoon stroll or an evening spent dancing and twirling under the stars. Go swimming! Find a fantastic old country road and hike down it with some friends.

Keeping your goals in mind, deciding in advance how you will handle things, and having a game plan will help you to feel successful and in control at the end of the day.

Thanks for the replies, I think everything in moderation is the thing to go by! :) I will try and make healthy choices but not get too strung up if I give in a couple of times... and make sure I get back on track as soon as I return!

KR - I used to go away a lot with my fiance but not so much these days as cash is tighter. So I guess I should enjoy myself for the time that we do get to go away! :) Thanks for the advice :)

I do have the app too so will try using that to log what I do have, and do a bit of exercise too.

Meh, I give in. I don't go all-out pigging until I burst, but I'll have a hamburger and a beer and won't worry about it. I don't every get to get out in social situations, so I let myself enjoy it.
