My mother and I have been taking yoga classes to help us feel better, and aid with some weight loss. I think it is working. I have been alternating my yoga classes with walking, and the weight is melting off. We went to a lovely class this morning where we worked on our full sun salutations. It was a great start to the weekend...getting me ahead of my calorie count, and energizing me for my day ahead of me. Is anyone else practicing yoga along with their fitness routine?

I want to add Yoga to my weekly mix of cadio and strength training/toning. I hear that it's a great way to stretch out your muscles and helps with your core, which, overall is great. I can't wait to be able to do so.

Me! I think it is helping me alot. I think it helps relieve stress which helps lower cortizone. From what I understand Cortizone is the stress hormone and promotes fat storage. I try to do 1/2 hour or more of yoga every day. I feel so much better afterwards.0

I tried yoga last year for a while but my joints are very stiff so I had difficulty with many moves, and some of the leaders are not very patient!! I'd like to give it a go again when I'm more able!!0

I was doing the elliptical for cardio and weight machines and wasn't getting anywhere. I switched to running on the treadmill, yoga and piyo and now the weight is dropping off and I'm getting stronger and much more toned. And it's WAY more enjoyable and challenging than weight training!0

I love yoga. I've been doing it once a week for a while now and it is my favorite day of the week! In the fall there will be another class offered at a time I can attend so I think I'll be adding that one to my routine. I'm excited for that because my instructor is talking about since it is an evening class we will learn the moon salutation and it will be very focused on relaxing and really stretching our muscles.0

I do Bikram Yoga once a week and I really find it's a great compliment to the other stuff I do in the gym (generally spin classes, swimming and I have a personal trainer once or twice a week). I don't know that it boosts my weight loss but it certainly lengthen my muscles and my back always feels great after a class. Keep it up and you will find it really helps your fitness. That, for me, is the biggest benefit and of course that means your weight loss goals will seem easier to achieve as well :happy:0

I did a yoga-pilates thing this morning via netflix instant streaming it was nice i felt very.... stretched and open lol if that makes sense0

I do the yoga/pilates on netflix too...it's so convenient! Plus it does feel really good after. I think the video I do is call Crunch: Super Slim Down or something- the instructor's name is Ellen Barrett0 -

i tried Yoga and honestly i absolutely hated it but i guess its just not for everyone i love doing pilates its very relaxing to me lol0

If yoga is difficult try gentle stretching and modify the movement as much as neccessary. This is what I do. I do a routine which modifies the movement-it's designed for overweight people and it hits all the stress areas. The neck the back, hamstrings. The movements are as simple as shoulder rolls.0

Love yoga. I have taken it many time over the years. Have had some teachers I liked more than other. The one I have now is awesome. Would like to try different types.0

LOVE Yoga. I do a hot vinyasa class 2-3 times a week (90 min. each). Can't get enough. The classes are challenging but feel amazing.0

I love practicing yoga - I do my morning yoga every day and it helps me get the day started on the right foot. This past week I started the Biggest Loser Weight Loss Yoga dvd and Bob is kicking my butt!! I feel so great after it though, it's a real workout and I feel strong and energized all day!0

I love Yoga. I started doing Yoga for the Warrior a few months ago once a week. It kicks my bum, but I have so much energy after.0

My joints are also very stiff, along with lower back issues that really affect my hips and pelvis and yoga has been helping me very much. There is something you can get at walmart for less then 10 dollars called yoga blocks that are foam blocks that you can use individually or stacked to assist with some of the moves where you are not yet flexible enough. Works for me. Hope this helps you0 -

I am sorry your experience wasn't as good as it should be. A good 'leader' would never be impatient, but instead help you find the modifications you need in order to eventually attain success in each pose. I hope you are able to give it another try sometime, and that you have better luck in instructors.0 -
I practiced yoga faithfully for about 7 years, then had to stop due to some health issue. It has been so hard to get back into practice. But my doctor strongly recommended it for controlling stress, which aggravates my disease. I have finally made the commitment and started going to a studio twice a week. I am SO glad I did. I feel amazing after my yoga classes, and I feel a little less frantic during the day, too!
As for the question of logging on MFP, I think there are 2 different entries for yoga under cardio. Both of them log exactly the same for the time spent. I usually use the Hatha Yoga option. Most forms of yoga (ashtanga, vinyasa, power, yoga fit) in classes are some variation of Hatha yoga.0 -

Hi all,
I am a yoga teacher and I find yoga to be relaxing, stress relieving and a great holistic body experience! I was really sorry to hear that some of you had had bad experiences with teachers or just didn't like yoga, yoga should not make you feel inadequate, unable or anything other that great and at peace...I would really recommend trying out a different teacher or different styles, there are so many different styles of yoga out there now, from easy to more challenging and aerobic. Unfortunately with all classes of any kind, there are teachers which you can gel with and others that you can't get on with or don't have the qualities or experience you need right now, it would be a shame to let that stop you from enjoying the great physical and emotional benefits you can get from yoga.
