Not eating 4 hours before bed?

I eat close to bed, and have no issues losing weight. I like eating at night, and plan most of my calories to be eaten after 730/8pm.
If you're mindlessly snacking and going over your calorie goal it will impact your weight loss goals, and some people have issues sleeping with a full belly.... You might stop eating at a certain point at night if you have any issues...3 -

Nope. You can eat all your calories 10 minutes before bed if you're eating in a deficit.6

The only reason I don't eat right before bed is because I sleep better. As far as weight loss, it's all calories in-calories out.

There are some studies that suggest that consuming your calories earlier in the day makes you lose more weight, even given the same level of calorie intake and exercise levels. Here is a story from the Washington Post. I try not too eat late, but mostly because I hate sleeping on a full stomach.3

It won't affect weight loss at all - that comes down to deficit and nothing else - so if you don't have any other issue with it like interrupting your sleep or stomach pain, there's no reason you have to have a specific cutoff time.
I eat a pretty big dinner at around 19:00 and go to sleep sometime around 22:00, so at that point it's been about 2.5 hours after dinner. Weight loss happens exactly as intended.1 -
Arbitrary rules are generally a bad idea. Loose formulations like "help lose weight" are not useful, just confusing. You can eat any time you want and lose weight as long as you have a sustained calorie deficit. The sustained calorie deficit is what makes you lose weight. Any strategy that makes a sustained calorie deficit easier, will help you stick to a sustained calorie deficit. Some people find rules like stopping eating at a certain time, makes it easier to stick to a sustained calorie deficit.
For me, not eating or drinking at least two hours before bed, prevents me from waking up because I need to go to the bathroom. Sleeping through the night reduces general stress levels. Sticking to regular meals and not eating until I'm hungry, also reduces general stress levels. Reduced stress levels reduces cravings. Reduced cravings makes it easier to stick to a sustained calorie deficit (or calorie balance, when you're in maintenance).3 -
I like to snack right up until I go to bed. Most of my calories are consumed at night and I've lost 80lbs that way. I need to take off some irresponsible winter weight and I'm cutting 10lbs now and I'm losing at the same rate with night eating. I do sometimes find that if I eat a huge meal before bed I wake up hungry probably because of a larger blood sugar swing in my sleep and I typically don't get hungry till lunchtime so if you can manage to do it while staying within calorie goals go nuts!0

I consume the majority of my calories after 7pm at night.1

I don't eat after 7 for a couple of reasons. The big one is I don't sleep well on a full stomach, also I am a binge eater. So if I pick food up after my last meal- there's a good chance it's going to be an excessive amount of useless food because I'm not eating for hunger at that point. It's just easier to 'close the kitchen' for me after supper.
You should just try it. If it works that's great! If it doesn't, make an adjustment.0 -
I can't stick to not eating after a specific time frame, due to working so many different hours. So what I have been sticking too is not eating 3-4 hours before bed. I find it does help me from binge eating, because I am a night binge eater.0

I plan a bowl of cereal in to diary for right before bed, I literally sit and eat it while reading before lights out - I'm sleeping better and down 11lbs in the last 4.5 months0

I eat most of my food at night through my 95 pound loss over the past 11 months. Granted thats changed recently since i work 2 jobs and walk 10-15 miles a day i find im having to force feed self in the morning to fuel my activity, Since after all that walking and working i tend to not have an appetite. Weird how that works.
But no the time of eating has nothing to do with weight loss, The calorie defecit does. Your body doesnt magicallly go "oh its night time holy *kitten* time to stop being a body and greedily hoard anything inside me" Your body works 24/7 if it didnt people who worked nights would all be obese
edit: i find i sleep best at night with something in my belly, Even if its small so i keep calories open for a snack, If i eat it cool, If i dont cool. In genenral the more rules i have the more likely i am to want to break them. I try not to complicate it. Telling myself "NO eating after dinner!" ...Hell id be eating non stop after dinner knowing my stubborn *kitten*. Its a mental thing i guess, Hate to be told i cant do something lol1 -

If I eat too close to when I sleep, I don't digest things well, sleep poorly, get bad gas, and wake up ravenous the next morning. The bad sleep and being overly hungry the next day certainly make it more difficult to lose weight. But if none of these things are true for you, then eat as late as you like.1

Yes, same thing happens to me! I'll end up waking up all night and then being suuuper hungry in the AM. Whenever I eat late at night because I have a bunch of calories left and hunger too ( or else, I will just forget the calories,) I am quickly reminded of why I don't do that anymore. Hard to think that not so long ago, that feeling was normal. But yeah, like @redsauadronleader said, if it's working fine for you, you probably don't need to think about it0 -

Nothing wrong with eating right before bed. I worked out later on in the day get home around 9 o'clock and I'll have something right when I get home and I'll have something before I go to bed I've lost 80 pounds over eight months and I've been maintaining for eight months so for me it's not an issue0

I eat quite a bit as a bedtime snack. Hasn't hindered my weight loss one bit.
If you sleep better on an empty stomach, don't eat after dinner. If you sleep better with food in you, eat. Comfort is the only indicator as to whether or not someone should eat before bedtime. (which includes things like GERD, etc)
