I have been trying to forget the great taste of these drinks since trying them at Starbucks, as I know they are nutritionally void, and expensive! So I came up with an alternative to be added to my protein smoothie arsenal! I promise you can't taste the Spinach!! nutrition info at bottom, plus comparison to Starbucks in same size, Venti

Recipe: Mocha Coconut Smoothie (or find here with pictures) http://www.pickynikki.ca/2011/07/23/mocha-coconut-smoothie/
!

In the mix:

handful of spinach (1c)
2 T Greek 0% Yogurt
1T shredded unsweetened coconut
1 scoop chocolate protein powder
1/2 t cocoa
expresso powder and/or small shot of strong coffee
1 scoop chia seeds (optional)
1 shot Davinci Sugar-free Coconut syrup
1-2 cup ice

Blend till smooth, and YUM!

vs

Starbucks Mocha Coconut Frappuccino Blended Light (no whip)

Wow that's much better nutrition wise! And it tastes just like the coconut mocha frappps? They're like liquid samoa cookies!

I buy my sugar-free syrups from www.lowcarbgrocery.com (it is in Canada) or www.tweedandhickory.com However, I am sure that there are sites in the US that ship them. If you buy over a certain amount shipping is free for lots of sites. I usually buy my PB2 powder from there as well (lowcarbgrocery) to combine shipping. :)

Most of my smoothies use just chocolate, or unflavoured protein powder, this is so I do not have a bunch of smoothie overhead ;) , and I can use them as a base for whatever flavour I am feeling at the time. These syrups help add taste without the calories :)

I'm sure yours is delicious, but just as a heads up, your nutritional info for the Starbucks drink is all off.

Just to let everyone know, this post wasn't to knock Starbucks, as one can see from my photos I LOVE starbucks! My love handles on the other hand DO NOT!

To my original recipe the light version I guess is lower since I had the wrong info, however eliminating the chia seeds it brings mine down to 198 cals. But I wouldn't personally.
Chia seeds are good for heart and cardiovascular health, and also aid in uhmm... movements as they carry fluids to intestines.

This recipe was to find a "healthier" version/ option for those craving that taste, and still making their calories count. This allows you to get in 34g of protein, and only 11 g of carbs vs 53g in the Starbucks version*, plus a serving of leafy greens.... a great trade off for your health and your wallet, but it is up to you :)

*With the correct nutritional info... which by the way was unintentional!!

This is Hungry Girl's version -

Wake Me Up Before You Coco...

This new recipe is a major eye-opener, and not only because it's made with coffee and chocolate -- it will open your eyes to just how easy it is to make Starbucks-style blendy drinks at home... YAY!!!

    Ingredients:

2 tsp. shredded sweetened coconut, roughly chopped

    2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tbsp. fat-free non-dairy powdered creamer (like the kind by Coffee-mate)

    1 tsp. instant coffee granules

1 tsp. mini semi-sweet chocolate chips

2 no-calorie sweetener packets (like Splenda or Truvia), or more to taste

    1/8 tsp. coconut extract

2 cups crushed ice or 10 - 16 ice cubes

    2 tbsp. Fat Free Reddi-wip

    1 tsp. light chocolate syrup

    Directions:

To toast the coconut, bring a skillet to medium heat on the stove; add chopped coconut and, stirring occasionally, cook for 2 minutes, or until lightly browned. (Or, if you have a toaster oven, just toast until lightly browned.) Set aside to cool.

In a tall glass, place cocoa powder, powdered creamer, coffee granules, chocolate chips, and sweetener. Add 1/2 cup very hot water and stir until ingredients have mostly dissolved. Add coconut extract, and transfer contents of the glass to a blender. Rinse the glass, if needed, and set aside.

Add ice to the blender, and blend at high speed until completely mixed and smooth. Pour into the tall glass.

If you like, add additional sweetener to taste. Top with Reddi-wip, drizzle with chocolate syrup, and sprinkle with toasted coconut. Enjoy!

Can't wait to try these! The two things I miss the MOST...mocha's, and pie!
