Carbohydrates: How Many?

So I have just started my weight-loss journey and was wondering about peoples thoughts on the amount of Carbs I should be in taking to lose weight.
I am a 25 year-old Male, 5" 8 and I currently weigh 260 lbs.
MFP pal is telling me I should eat around 200, but I don't know that seems high to me based on my current understanding. If I am eating around 1600 calories, I figured 100 - 120 would be a better number for a carb limit. Of course I also understand not all carbs are made equal, and carbs from green veggies for example are much better than from pasta, but its something I am still curious about.
Thoughts?

However many you want. It's the total number of calories that control weight loss, not carbs.3

Weight loss is dependent on your calorie intake, and hitting the correct calorie deficit for your weight loss goals. Macros ratios (carbs, fat, protein), are a preference thing and will vary between people.0

I calculate my protein needs based on the 1g/lb of lean mass and then fats based on .35g/lb of IDEAL bodyweight and then carbs fall where they may after those two are looked after.1

well I take in close to 300g a day on average and down 11lbs...you don't have to go low carb to lose weight2

Oh okay, Awesome. Thank you for the posts everyone and the nice welcome. I look forward to the time I spend on here ^ ^.3

I work on a daily percentage:
40% Carbs
40% Protein
20% Fat
No carbs or fruit after midday snake, veggies and protein only.0 -
Start by having a journal. Select a starting amount of grams you'd like to try and personally log any changes and experiences you and your body are having with any number of carbs and fat that you're using. Stop when you're encountering too many and too severe consequences. Also start by logging any negatives about your personal health prior to the test/change.0

Is there a reason you want to cut carbs after a certain time of the day? Not to sound cheeky, but veggies are carbs.0 -

There is no need to do that. You won't lose weight any quicker.
If you find yourself hungry I'd increase the fat.
I'd feel starving at 20%.2 -

For me that would be way too much protein and not enough fat. Also, I believe cutting carbs and fruit after midday would have no benefit with your weight loss journey. It is just an extra rule which would have no impact.
If this works for you in keeping a calorie deficit then go for it but I wouldn't recomend it for most.1 -

Sorry for semi hijacking your thread and thanks everyone for your input !!! I will definitely ask my licensed dietitian your questions when I see him again in a few of weeks. I should have explained more in my post. The no carbs/no fruit after midday snack relates to starchy carbs like potatoes/pasta/rice. Veggies & protein only. This was his "initial" recommendation when I went to him for weight loss help pre-double knee replacement. I'm 58, 286 lbs and exercise is a challenge. As mentioned, I'm seeing him again in 3 weeks - we will look at both my diet & exercise log and tweak as & where we can.
