hi everyone! I'm a college student who's started a 1200 calorie a day diet. It's my second day, and I feel really tired/sleepy and have trouble concentrating. Is this normal (especially because I haven't been working out either)? Any tips on how to keep up with calories without overdoing on carbs and sugars? Is this a good diet plan for losing belly fat?

Not enough information.
1200 is the minimum calorie goal for women trying to lose weight. It is not a one size fits all number or appropriate for everyone.
Age, height, weight, and daily activity determines how much you need to maintain and what is a safe goal for you for weight loss.
I never had to resort to 1200 calories a day. Even now, with only vanity pudge to get rid of, I try to keep an average intake of 1800-2000 While cutting. I'm not overweight or tall. I'm just active.0 -
What Shadow said, except for some very spot on calorie counting all the numbers involved are going to be estimates and you need to use your experience to adjust them accordingly.
I would recommend starting conservatively on the high side and moving down if needed, even with the weight gain associated with college I dont think you need to aim for rock bottom calorie numbers as you should be fairly active.

There's no good diet for losing belly fat. You don't get to choose specifically where the fat comes off. There's no such thing as overdoing on carbs and sugars unless you have a medical reason for it, assuming that carbs and sugars don't make you eat more calories than you take in.1 -

You can't choose where you lose fat but you don't have to eat at a deficit at that height/weight, especially at finals time! Find your maintenance and build muscle. You can stay the same weight while losing body fat by building muscle. Many colleges have gyms and you may be able to find Strong Curves at a library.0

At 5'5" and 125 pounds, you are already in the healthy BMI for your height. Don't go below 114 pounds or you will be dipping into the unhealthy range.
You might try strength training instead of losing weight. Two people can be the same weight but look very different depending on their muscle mass. Don't worry about "bulking up" (which I know a lot of women worry about). It really doesn't happen that way, lol. Building some abs will make your stomach look and feel less "squishy".
