"I'll start tomorrow..."

My diet has considerably changed since I began graduate school. I keep finding myself in the midst of a moment where I wonder why I feel painfully of food. I tell myself "Oh it's alright you'll work it off later." Or "Just reduce how much you eat tomorrow." I've gained 20 pounds in the span of 12 months. Today was a better day. I spent my spare time reading and doing yoga instead of eating. Most days I just order food in because I lack the energy to cook a proper meal. I tell myself "Tomorrow you'll cook yourself a healthy meal." I don't want to wait for tomorrow to come any more; I want to take control today and start getting back to being healthy, active, and energetic.

Hey, congrats on taking the initiative and welcome to the community!
If you're okay with some friendly advice, I just want to throw some out there because I see new people every day driving themselves crazy due to a fear of messing up their progress - you don't have to eat healthy to lose weight; you just need to be at a caloric deficit.
I usually tell people that are addicted to fast food that they can start out slow and continue eating what they normally eat as long as they don't go over their caloric limit. The reason for this is because weight loss/maintaining a healthy weight is all about endurance. Optimally, you'll want to find a plan that you can reasonably stick to for life, and going cold turkey is going to be hard to stick to for the next 30/40/50/60 years.
So take it easy, cook some healthy meals when it's not going to break your schedule, but don't deny yourself a hamburger if it fits into your calories for the day. If a personal experience relieves you at all, I lost the first 50 of my pounds eating pretty much nothing but Taco Bell, frozen dinners, and McDonald's.0 -

If you find yourself running out of time and energy at the end of the day, you don't have to go out for fast food or order in. You can cook and freeze meals in advance and store them up for times like this. There are also healthier, nutritionally well-balanced frozen meals available for you to purchase if you don't want to make your own. Just check the labels, pick some that look/sound appetizing, and stock up. After awhile, you'll figure out which ones fit your calorie and macro goals and taste good, too. Then you'll always have an easy, reasonable alternative for those times when you just aren't up to cooking.1
