Back popping while doing leg exercises?

I lay down a lot so I have started doing exercises in bed when I can't get up. I started laying flat and doing a bicycling motion with my legs. I can feel pulling in my legs and also my abdomen from keeping the legs up, which is really nice.

But can this movement hurt your back?

My lower back makes a lot of popping noises while I'm doing this. I'm hoping this isn't a bad thing (my lower back gives me trouble and I'm kind of wishing that this popping is actually good from using the muscles).

Are these exercises given to you by a doctor? Do you have a medical reason for lying down a lot?

These exercises weren't given to me by anyone, I saw it on television so I'm trying it out.

I have severe depression and lately I have been unable to get out of bed for more than a few minutes. I was given exercises to do by my nutritionist but they all require me to be standing up.

Normally back popping is a sign of a weak lower back, make sure your exercises are concentrating on strengthening that.

I'm sorry, I thought I replied to this and realized I must have clicked "preview" instead.

What sorts of exercises can strengthen the back? Thank you very much for that information, because I didn't know a weak back could do that.

Sometimes back popping happens when you don't brace your abs hard enough, which allows the spine to wiggle. Google "drawing in maneuver" and do it firmly while doing the bicycle exercise. Post your results. :+1:

possibly explain that you can't get up and you need something that you can do lying down. otoh, i'm not sure a nutritionist is the greatest person to be giving physio instructions in the first place.

my other thought would be to do them on the floor instead of in bed. a solid surface under your back would make it easier for you to find and maintain neutral pelvic stability while doing them.

Most exercises that are to be done lying down should be done on a firm surface, like the floor, not a bed. The bed, even with a firm mattress, does not provide proper support.

Also strengthen the core/abs and stretch the lower abs/hips/back.

I have this same problem. Definitely try to do these exercises on the floor, as the bed really is not firm enough. Look up good stretches for the back, and do the stretches often. Work on strengthening your core as well. Many back stretches and core exercises can be done lying down, so just google around and see what works for you.
