Has anyone tried or knows of someone that has tried hypnosis for weight loss...self esteem...phobias or anything for that matter? Curious how the outcome went?

I know a couple people who did it for weight loss. Worked great for a while but then it didn't. I don't know the whole story of how long they kept going or whatever but they definitely gained the weight back.

My Grandma used it to quit smoking - lasted a couple years but then she had a bad day and started again. She's since used another method to quit (the patch) and it has lasted like 20 years.

I don't know anyone who's used it but I have researched it a lot. In my opinion is very ...Dangerous? You are essentially putting yourself into an incredibly impressionable and delicate mental state, and then passing the power to mould your psyche to a complete stranger. More power than I would like to give another person quite honestly. I think there are other forms of therapy that could help a person better identity why they have a bad relationship with food, instead of just trying to trick the mind into ignoring a problem that's there. Just my take. :);)

It might work to some degree in a suggestible enough person, but in my opinion if someone is considering getting hypnotised into changing their relationship with food, they're better off investing in seeing a real therapist for their issues.

I would really recommend Paul Mckenna! He has some videos on youtube for weightloss as well. I'm on day 4 of his change your life in seven days. I do feel better, but in the same time frame I've started yoga and running again, so I don't know how much of a contribution it has alone. I do also see a therapist as well. Alone perhaps- I think it would be like a band aid- but the deeper issues also need to be explored as well.

Hypnosis is essentially an attempt to convince you that you can do something that you don't think you can do. Instead of looking for someone to tell you that you can lose weight, just lose the weight and then you'll have proof that you can lose the weight.

I had one MFP friend who regularly got Hypnosis and she did lose weight...trouble was, when she didn't keep going back to get more Hypnosis she gained! it must wear off eventually! don't even know what happened to that woman now, she disappeared from MFP...

Better to learn about calories and control intake while learning to move more - thats the way to achieve long term weight loss (I can confirm that as I'm maintaining goal weight for 4 yrs).

Seriously, I tried this about 20 years ago for weight loss at the recommendation of my doctor at the time.

I lasted only 2 sessions - I got the same feeling that I do sitting in front of a casino machine - "how stupid is this?"

I really wasnt giving myself over to the idea that it could work - sort of like voodoo to me, and I am a very pragmatic person so this was way out of my comfort zone.

If you believe that hypnosis can help, then give it a try - it wont hurt you.

I just downloaded an app. I figure if nothing else, it will help relax me. I can use all the help I can get in that department.

When I graduated from college in the mid-90s, the requirements for becoming a licensed hypnotherapist in my state were 25 hours of AIDS education and the payment of $40. No, that's it.

Stir of Echoes is a fun movie, but it's just a movie. Call the psychic hotline instead.

I enjoy listening to Paul McKenna before bed or first thing in the AM before I've eaten anything. Relaxing and reinforcing the stuff we all know but forget in the moment.

Our son's Project Grad (it's an organized, safe graduation party that is supervised by parents) hired a hypnotist for entertainment purposes. At the beginning, he explained that no one can be hypnotized against their will (which is why I kept repeating, "I don't want to be hypnotized," under my breath). Lol. This could explain why it had no effect on you.

I tried it, paid £240 for the pleasure and nothing, not an attitude adjustment. Nothing. I wasn't expecting any quick fixes, but I did expect to feel more motivated but nothing at all.

The actual sessions were really relaxing though....
