Period problems

This is more a question coupled with a problem but - how do you ladies deal with your periods when trying to lose weight?
What I mean by that is I'm currently bloated and miserable. I feel HUGE (although that may not even remotely be the case) and I also feel like I have no motivation to be good today. I'm going to be good regardless, but I feel like I'm as big as a house (even though it has like no logical basis). And I knew if I stepped on a scale, the weight wouldn't be reflective of all the progress I've made. It's really discouraging. I feel really cruddy and all I want to do is sleep and eat.

I ignore it. Seriously.
First, you probably shouldn't weigh yourself if a gain will frustrate you...you know most women retain water that will make the scale temporarily move higher. So ignore that.
Next, go exercise. Having your period is not a valid reason not to exercise. If you have cramps that are problematic, pop some advil and get moving. I have always found that exercise make me feel BETTER during my period.
Don't eat more than you should. Do what you need to do to make this happen...either depend on willpower and resist, or don't bring tempting treats into your house if your willpower is not enough. Or just get out of the house and keep busy so you aren't tempted to eat out of boredom.2 -
Stay off the scale, for one.
I suffered for years with miserable periods. I would recommend taking one day off. Don't even bother to get dressed if you don't feel like it. Just lay around and be miserable and sleep. If you want to eat, plan some comforting foods within your caloric range.
I have to say I'm loving peri menopause/menopause. I was so miserable for decades, this is the most wonderful relief. The hot flashes I had for decades are almost gone. The mood swings...gone. The pain...gone. Bloating...gone. That cruddy feeling you mention...gone.2 -

Yeah, unfortunately that's me. I do have PMDD so it's usually a pretty miserable experience. The plus this time is I have severe back issues that I exacerbated pretty bad yesterday by overexerting myself so I'm kind of just stuck in bed and none too happy.Gimsteinn1 wrote: »I just accept that when I have my periods I won't see my abs for a 5-9 days and that I'll feel ugly, bloated, fat and disgusting. It's just that part of the month... I also gain up to 9-12 lbs during that time, water weight that goes away within days but still it sucks and makes me feel like I've lost the battle.
Then the period is over and I feel like myself again, ready to workout and eat right
Yeah the water weight is always the weirdest thing! I think that's what's giving me the sensation that my body got bigger again even if it didn't actually get that much bigger.0 -
I go for it, kind of. My cramps get so ridiculously bad, moving is difficult at all, and working out is near impossible. All I want is to cuddle up with a heating pad, eat, maybe cry and watch Lifetime. I try to remind myself that I won't be the most disgusting blubbering mess of a person forever, but that's hard. If I have a craving, I'll try to curb it with the healthiest option available in a small portion, or I'll go overboard later If I deprive myself. If it's just an overwhelming desire to gorge, I try to drink a big glass of water and eat all the veggies/high fiber I can cram in my face. Maybe not the best plan, but better than an entire bag of chips, which is what I really want. Probably not helpful, I'm no expert or success story, but I know me, and I say do what gets you through with the least regret, and be gentle to yourself.1

Drink more water to help with the bloat and get to the gym. I don't let my period keep me from working out, and exercise can improve your mood. Getting out in the sun also helps me feel better, so I go outside when the weather is nice.1
