Soy or Whey?

I drink protein shakes on a regular basis but have always used the Body Fortress super advanced whey protein from Wal-Mart (mainly because it's cheap and doesn't taste nasty). My trainer suggested NOW Sports soy protein powder because she said a lot of the cheaper ones are just that - cheap, and not really that good for you. The NOW is about $10 more and I used it for the first time today and it seemed a little chalky. I only used 8 oz. of liquid and it suggests 8-12. Should I go ahead and use 12 oz. or is soy protein just naturally more chalky than whey? I also put the protein powder in last and then shook it up, so maybe I should put the protein in first, then shake or blend. I used a blender bottle, so maybe I just need to put it in the blender. I don't know...I just know I didn't like the chalky texture of the soy (I'm a texture person) and I don't want to pay $10 more for something I don't like as much. Thoughts?

Whey is the "whey" to go. Ok, sorry. But seriously I like whey because it is taken up by your muscles VERY quickly after a work-out.

And if it saves you money and tastes better - BONUS!!!!!

Oh good Lord. Whey would kill me. Any dairy gives me terrible acne, stomach aches, bloating, and headaches.
  • I second the above comment, whey protein is great. I like soy products but between "protein shakes," whey is the way to go.

I have personally used the Body Fortress Brand for years and have only ever seen positive results from it. As for the Whey VS Soy bit, I stick SOLELY to whey in terms of supplement protein and BLACKLIST soy protein in all shapes and forms from my diet.

The sole reason why I hate, loathe, and abhor soy is because of the estrogen spike it causes in men. I'm looking to add protein, not go through a hormonal shift....

For the ladies though, its good to have both because soy provides a more continuous delivery of protein to the body whereas whey provides an instant delivery of protein to the body which is why it is such an ideal protein source for post workout nutrition.

I use Body Fortress Protein Shots because there is no milk involved. I cannot seem to tolerate it anymore. My nutritionist said that whey protein isolate it the best type of protein, which is in the Body Fortress Protein Shots.

I use the BSN SYntha 6 shake, it's whey but it's a meal replacement. as a regular protein shake I use the Isoflex. yes, they're more expensive than the walmart ones but your trainer is right, the ingredients are much higher quality. the two that i use taste great and aren't chalky. i dont know if that's because they're whey instead of soy. I just figure for something that important to my body's recovery, i'm willing to spend the extra bucks. I make that up by cruising the supermarket flyers every friday to see who has the best deal on chicken. lol i eat a lot of chicken.

But whey is a milk derivative. Can you tolerate whey but not casein or lactose maybe? I can't deal with any of them.

I don't have diary issues so whey isn't a problem for me and I'm a girl so soy isn't really a problem either - I'm just trying to stick with what my trainer wants me to do. There is a NOW whey protein isolate but it's almost twice the price of the soy. Is the Body Fortress whey protein isolate? I guess I could go look at my container...

I can live with the soy until this container is gone, but if it's always this chalky no matter what I do, I'm definitely going back to the Body Fortress - especially since you can get a $1 coupon off of their facebook page every month!

Go for Whey! I use MRM Whey protein and unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I don't do a lot of dairy simply because I sing A LOT and it helps your body create mucus. I have PLENTY and don't relish ear infections or blowing my nose. ;) Also, I stay away from soy in large concentrated doses as a woman due to the artificial estrogen content most products have. I've already lost 1 ovary, so I would rather stay away from any further artificial estrongens.

For those of you who use a specific brand, what store/website do you buy from and how much is it? For example - the Body Fortress is at Wal-Mart for about $15 and has about 27 scoops. Very cheap for protein powder. The NOW I found at the health food store here in Joplin for about $25 and it only has about 20 scoops. I'm a bargain shopper...
  • Sorry guys, I can not drink ANY of those powders from walmart. I think both whey and soy are important in a shake. I drink Vi-Shape nutritional shakes every day of the week. They are delicious, not chalky, and very affordable!

So is that a pre-made shake like Muscle Milk and stuff like that? Where do you get it and how much is it?
