Trying to get healthy

Hi, My name is Michelle.

I am a forty-seven year old woman from a small town in Ohio that I love. I am a mother of three and a grandmother of 5.

In December I was diagnosed with Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, and High Cholesterol. So now with my daily vitamin I am taking five pills a day. My grandmother was a diabetic, with blood pressure and cholesterol problems. I watched her loose her eye sight, then loose the ability to walk, then have to go on dialysis. This disease took one of the most important people in my life from me. Though I love my grandma dearly I don't want to turn into her.

I have five of the most beautiful grand children in the world and I want to be here to spend as much time as possible with them.

I am trying to teach myself to eat healthier, and portion control. The hard time I have is sometimes eating healthier means more expensive. So I am also trying to learn some healthy recipes that can be made without blowing my whole grocery budget.

I am also trying to teach myself to be more active, so to that end I have joined the local YMCA and with the help of a personal trainer, and a program called ActivTrax, I now have a exercise program specifically designed for me. I have been trying to go the Y, three times a week, and on the days I don't go, I have been going for 3-3 block walks a day.

I would love to meet new people to exchange recipes, exercise and activity ideas with.

Thank you

    Hey Michelle,
    Childless NZ'er here,
Admitting that that's not what you want for yourself is a huge step.
It can be really difficult when first starting out to get exercise in your daily routine especially when weight is an issue.
When I was helping my mom in a similar situation she had this to say:
"I found it really helpful to focus at the start on the food I ate, once I was able to get a regular healthy diet, I found I had more energy and had lost enough weight to start walking for 20 mins a day every day, even bringing the kids along."
    Hope this helps, good luck
