I have a dillema I am starting out making cakes been doing it for about 6 months and I am quite good at it a talent I never knew I had but it can be fattening all those lovely aromas when the cake is baking and then well I need to trim most of the cakes that means left overs and I have to taste icing it is the only way I know I have got it right I couldnt sell if I wasnt happy with the taste. mY problem is next week I have to make a 3 tier wedding cake (first time I have done a wedding cake and I am nervous about it anyway) but 3 cakes I am going to try and make enough icing and ice in 1 day so I only need to taste once but all that gorgous cake my kids will probably eat it for dessert but how do I get through without eating it I usually taste a small mouthful just to check it is ok and always fear that they wont like it even though I always use the same recipe and everybody I have made cakes for over the last 2 years say how loverly it is and the recipe is just about perfect now (that is why I starting making them and charging)
Please some tips of people who maybe have done something similar on the biggest loser they chew gum maybe once I have tasted the icing and got it right I could chew gum or maybe I could do it like a wine taster taste but spit it out I dont want to damage my diet that is the most important thing so eating is not an option.

Just taste one little bit and count the calories! As long as you count it and don't go over you will be fine!!!
Good luck! :flowerforyou:0 -
Maybe you could make yourself a cupcake lol and just eat that add it into your cals for the day...your own mini cake that way its not random grabbing bits and peices you will have a measured amount and can make sure its in your cals.
Also make sure your really full so you'll be less tempted.
Good luck:flowerforyou:0 -
I would just taste it and count the calories...I wouldnt eat the cake though...just sample to make sure its ok.0

I agree, I would just calculate it into my calories for the day (if you feel like that would leave you short, exercise a bit to earn the extra calories).0

I'm in the same boat! I started caked decorating 2 years ago. First just as a hobby, my hobby then turned into a business. Then in addition last year I started working in a local Grocery store decorating cakes full time. I'm around cake, dougnuts, bread etc. everyday. That has brought me to where I am today. About 20lbs overweight.. Those evil cake scraps!!!!! What I do now is throw them away as soon as I cut them off that way they are not there calling my name!! It's HARD!!! I just started my weight loss journey a little over a week ago. The 1st few days were hard...but it gets easier as I loss weight.. The lost weight motivates me and this website really helps also!
Hope it helps,

Trance, I am glad that you suggested throwing the scraps away. I was going to say that but I think advice from a fellow baker makes it more helpful.
I like cake but there is no way I want to eat it everyday. It takes the specialness of it away.
I bake for things at church and don't taste everything. If you're using a new recipe I might but one you've used in the past is a pretty safe bet it's ok.0 -
I know if I was sensible I would throw the scraps away but my kids love um and none of them have weight issues they never have sweet stuff for dessert so I usually save the scraps for that perhaps I should just bag up the scraps evenly for each of my kids and then seal them and let them eat after dinner.0

Im so glad someone else in the cake making biz asked this question. I recently started doing this myself for fun and now people want b-day cakes or one for just about any special occasion. Its a ton of fun, but HARD not to taste it!!0

It is very hard....especially when you try a new cake recipe and its a cake you really like!!!!!! I just keep reminding myself when it comes time to cut and trim the cake how hard I have work everyday to get the weight off that was soooooo easy to put on. I usually try to bake the one day and decorated the next. That way the yummy smells are not still floating around in the air to make it even extra hard. to resist the cake scraps.0

Repeat with me now... "Nothing tastes as good as thin feels!"
Have one taste to make sure it tastes up to your standards and then throw it away.:brokenheart:0
