Due to injuries (left glute, right foot) I am thinking of giving up steady state cardio (running, kickboxing) in exchange for low impact resistance training of some sort. Any advice on whether this will be effective in managing calories and losing fat and changing the shape of my body?

For what its worth, I am female and have lost 50 lbs since Feb through 5 days of cardio per week and 1500 cals per day. I have about 40 more lbs to go before goal. Thank you.

I just tweaked my calf - AGAIN, so I need to cut back on my jogging as well. How about resistance training and some cardio (once you heal). But perhaps look at more cross - training. Walking, swimming, biking, jogging - keep switching it up prob helps with over-use injuries ( I should listen to my own advice).

If you can swim, it's a great full body workout.

for weights, I have been reading a lot on doing more compound exercises - things like squats, deadlifts, pushups, pull-ups, lunges. etc.

I had lost 30lbs with Cardio and am currently doing a strength program. What has helped me though is wearing a HRM. That way I know what I burned and have a better gauge of what I could eat.

I haven't lost much more but I have toned up and lost another size in my pants. Just remember that muscle weighs more than fat so as you gain muscle the scale may not move much but you will shrink.

I'd say grab a trainer to show you the ropes and hit the weights. Not some low weight, i never sweat and can still look cute doing it training like some try to convince the ladies to do but real weight training. It will do wonders.

However I would also suggest keeping about 3 days of around 45 minutes of cardio as well if possible. Does good things for the heart and such as well as a good bonus calorie burn. I have some damage as well (damaged ankle, knee replacement, missing a bit from a bike wreck on the other knee) and find the low impact cardio from machines like the elliptical works well for me.

Read "The new lifitng rules for Women". IT answers all your questions. I love it! You will actually be floored with how much Bodyfat you will now lose with resistance and weight training. Scale will creep but it's ok. Your inches will keep coming doen and you will look and feel better in your clothes!!!

Oh in the past 9 weeks I have lost 7 pounds of scale weight but 15 pounds of actual body fat. I look tons better, especially from the back. ;-)
