can anybody help, looking for a simple/easy to follow upper body program, all internet searches end up trying to sell me something or subscribe to something. not expecting miracles, but would prefer to not look like a slightly tubby 12 year old by the time i hit 40!!
Thanks in advance Ric.

Why do you just want to work your upper body and not your whole body?

For a newbie, I'd recommend starting strength or stronglifts 5x5.

Not judging, but I always find it amusing to see guys in the gym with good upper body musculature and chicken legs B) To the OP, Stronglifts is a good starting program, easy to follow and easy to make good gains with it. Don't ignore the lower body though. Strong legs, buttocks, abs, hips etc. are the foundation everything else is built upon, the nice upper body is just the window dressing.

Never skip leg day! I agree with the above posters. Full body compound lifts for the win!
