They are fat, caused by having excess fat. You can minimise them by losing fat, which means being in a calorie deficit until they go.2

Eat in a calorie deficit and lift heavy. "Clean" eating, whatever that means to you, has little to no effect on weight loss.2 -
Ummm, yeah.
To lose fat, you must burn more calories than you eat. MFP will automatically give you a calorie count to achieve your goals (you have to fill out the info of course, height, weight, age, male or female, whatever).
You just log everything you eat. Weigh out foods. Be as exact as possible. Weigh food. If you eat a package, like yogurt, a single serving, I don't weigh that..... Weigh food portions out. Have I said that enough? Weigh food.
Triscuit crackers, weigh them. Chicken, broccoli, lunch meat, butter, sugar, noodles (pre cooked weight), peanut butter, etc, all weigh out, to the gram if possible. I eat a banana, I weigh the whole thing, eat banana, then put peel on scale weigh that, then subtract peel weight from total weight and that's how I get calories for that. If I take a banana with me, I weigh it before I leave, and most if the time the peel is like 2oz, maybe a little less....
Every day. Everything I eat. Weight is coming off. Exercise makes you healthier, more fit, and it speeds the process a little probably. So exercise is awesome too.
There is no way to spot reduce fat, or to target love handles. You just lose weight everywhere, at a snails pace. It's not fast. If you have goals, you're gonna have to work to achieve them. Discipline. Don't give up.
Hope something in here helps you out.1 -
I was very lean with visible abs before the love handles went. Getting "in shape" helped as well. I've never gotten lean enough to be happy with my thighs, and a 5-pound gain means I have fat on my sides. Genetics.
Just keep losing weight, as advised above. And definitely lift some weights. There's no secret, we all have our areas we do not like.0 -
Shouldn't they be called "No Love handles" because you get NO LOVE when you got em1

I feel your pain. Unfortunately our bodies lose fat where it wants to, you can't target a certain area for fat loss (how I wish I could). Try doing lat pull downs you build muscle and tone the area, at least that what my trainer has in my routine and I'm noticing a slight difference. Good luck!1

My sister in law had the same problem, she called them "chichos" (that's how it's pronounced-no idea on the spelling). She's el Salvadoran. Not sure of the exact interpretation, but I always thought it sounded cuter than love handles or back fat. So I call them "chichos" and pretend they're adorable.1
