From what I understand, the only way to make it taste like take out is to add a lot more peanut oil than you probably want to. I have an acquaintance who says that lo mein depends on peanut oil for that take out flavor, as well as a very hot wok, sugar, and MSG.

That sounds likely.Hate to think of all the sauces tried.......with no change in taste.Oh,well....will stick with take out.

I'm a sucker for Lo Mein/ Pad Thai however I've yet to find a recipe that tastes like take away without total sabotage.
However I use rice noodles, Vegan bullion paste, soynut butter, and sriracha with fresh-squeezed orange juice as a base for my pad thai and it comes pretty darn close. You could use peanut butter but this way soyNut Butter tends to have a more of a mild taste and less sweet than peanut butter. And if you use peanut butter please use the natural stuff not Jiff or Skippy. Waaaaay too sweet & high in sugar.
