Hey, I'm Madison. I recently stopped taking diet pills because I wanted to do this the healthy weight. Since stopping I've gained about 10-12 pounds (pictures are before) so I'm back up to 168~. I've been running/walking 3 miles every other day and so far I'm still gaining weight steadily - how many calories should I be eating? Is it true you gain weight when you first start exercising?

@srumley0001 We can't tell you how many calories you should be eating without knowing your numbers - age, height, starting weight, goal weight.

The MFP app actually recommends a daily calorie goal when you fill out your profile page. What number does it say there?

Healthy way is slow and steady
Eat the 1200 and half your added exercise calories. You will lose weight. Remember us ladies in particular tend to have large water weight fluctuations in particular around time of month. Stick with it log everything and you will make great progress.

Be consistent with your logging. Whether you had a good day or bad what matters is being accountable to yourself. Over time, you subconsciously become better at keeping track and that's the most important thing about losing weight, KNOWING.

You can go to the gym all day long running & walking to try to lose weight but if your diet isn't right you won't lose nothing. I've learnt over the past 2 years that my diet is the most important thing in losing weight. Since concentrating on what I'm putting in my body I've manage to lose more weight in the past 2 months than I did in the perverse 2 years
I would recommend weighing your food when making it, that was the biggest surprise to me how much food I need or didn't need to consume in a single day also eating good clean carbs at the right time will help you

As someone who fell off the wagon and only just now started again, the best advice I can give you is: Stick with it. Don't take breaks. If you go over your calories / don't manage to work out, it's not a failure. Write it off as a bad day but don't let it discourage you. Log everything, even if it's "bad" and then learn from that mistake.

how many calories should I be eating?

With a relatively small amount to lose, you should probably look at amending your weight loss rate, guessing it's giving you 1200 because you've chosen 2lb per week as your rate of loss and the lowest it will go is 1200 calories for a woman.

Your TDEE based on the stats given above would be around 1850 as sedentary and so if you switch to 1lb per week you should get a daily goal of around 1350 through MFP's system. Make sure you also have the correct activity level set up based on your normal non-exercise activity.

You would also want to eat some of your exercise calories back. If you're calculating burns using MFP's database, machine reads or a non HR fitness tracker it's best to start with around 50% and review after a month.
Is it true you gain weight when you first start exercising?

You can retain water when you first start out exercising or change up the intensity of your exercies. You may also retain water at different points throughout your menstrual cycle, when eating excess've sodium, certain medications, when dehydrated, when changing macros or if you've had alcohol. Using a trend weight app such as Happy Scale or Libra can help to understand the fluctuations.

The most important advice I can give you for weight loss is buying a food scale, when you're on such a low calorie goal accuracy is more important than ever and it's the best way to accurately log your intake (ensuring you're chosing accurate database entries too).
