Yoga for toning up?

Run 5 miles on a daily basis and lost 26 pounds. I'm 5'6 and 127 now!Now with summer I have time to get back into yoga.will it tone me up or should I lift weights? Not gonna lie I have a flat butt and it's killing me haha. Side note: I love running and yoga because they calm me. I don't know where I'd start if I were to do a weight lifting routine. How many pounds, reps, etc....? Too confusing and I feel like I wouldn't get results because I would have no clue as to what I'm doing

Nah, yoga won't give much visible results. I'd follow any of the better strength programs mentioned here daily, like NROLFW, Stronglifts, Nerd Fitness, Strong Curves, etc. They explain all the details, like sets & reps.
By the way, strength training is calming too, but more in a "I can handle anything" kind of way.1 -
If you were completely new to any exercise whatsoever, yoga would do it.
As you are already reasonably fit adding a weight routine would help you.
Here is a good link of routines- bodyweight, dumbbells, and barbell. Chose one that suits your needs and abilities.

Look at strong curves, I think that may help your butt but, a lot of how well it will develop is genetic.
You may want to have a look at the recomposition thread as well.

If you are looking into body recomposition, would yoga be the best possible option? Probably not. Would it work if you progress and push yourself each time, perhaps. But I would definitely say less optimal in particular for the glute building.
Definitely look into Strong Curves. I love yoga and lifting and incorporate them into my routine, so you can still do the other exercises you love and lift 3x per week.1 -
lifting is only 3 to 4 times a week so u can do yoga at other times. u need to do squats n deadlifts to get perky glute. use light weight first n then slowly add weights. do a search on utube, tons of glutes videos
good luck!0 -
Yoga is a great complement to lifting because it helps with flexibility. Lifting helps with mobility. I recommend both.
I started with stronglifts but read the thread linked above.
Lifting calms me. I listen to classical music and completely zone out the world and lift. Utter bliss.1 -
Have you looked into Piyo it is fantastic! fast vigorous yoga ?0

Say more about PiYo....my club just started offering a class. Now, I do yoga twice a week and Pilates, but am thinking about trying PiYo because it's more rigorous....and it's only 45 minutes!0

You're tall and thin and you run. Yoga, done in a studio, with good teachers, with a focus on form, could make you look fabulous. What is it you're going for?0 -
It's not very likely that yoga will get you the desired results, and certainly not in a reasonable time frame. Strength training and a bit of emphasis on your posterior chain, will help with the flat bum & help your running.0

If you can fit it into your schedule, why not do both? It doesn't seem right to drop something you clearly love0

Sounds like OP isn't happy with her body composition, in particular her glutes. Yoga is fantastic but it is not going to build up glutes like strength training will.0 -
Lifting will give more definition and bulk than yoga. Yoga is still good though...especially Hatha yoga.0

Where do you live? - I'm a big fan of Core Power Yoga's Yoga Sculpt class - it's a heated class that's kind of like a bootcamp with some yoga and weights (think many reps, pushups/biceps, planks, sit-ups, a short cardio series, and squats). Sometimes I'll double up and take a Yoga sculpt for an hour and then a C2 (Core Power's Vinyasa yoga) for the second hour - gets in the yoga and the weights! I've definitely seen a lot more definition in my body and it also burns the calories (I've used a fitbit and I burn 400-500 calories per class.)1

I say do the yoga, I've been a convert for a while now. It's helped reduce major pain in my joints and give me much more mobility. However, no, I don't believe it'll give you any 'tone'. Toning is building small amounts of muscle, and to do that you'll need to do weight/resistance training, and maybe even reduce some of the cardio (or increase calories, or both). If you're not looking to be a body builder, but want muscle tone, consider body weight training. It should build enough to give you what you want and you won't have to worry about how much you can bench or squat, or whatever. I've been doing bodyweight training almost exclusively for 2.5 years and it's done wonders for me. I lift lower weight/high reps occasionally, but mostly just do body weight circuit training, some cardio (running/walking), and core work for an all-around full body workout 5 days a week.1

Thanks! I'm unhappy because with running, all my muscles are in my legs but none in my glutes. I know sprinters have stronger glutes than distance runners since they use them to gain speed and maintain it for shorter distances, making it more intensive.0

Glutes is one of the easiest part to train n to get result on. Just do a utube search for routines n Here's a sample video

Did she start off with a flat butt though? It's easy to see someone and assume their body is a result of what exercise they do, when it could be the way their body responds, it could be genetics (she always had a great butt but yoga just maintained and enhanced it). I'm not saying yoga doesn't work the butt and body, but to actually significantly and optimally build the glute muscles up? There are much more effective ways to do it that OP could incorporate.. and she could still run and do yoga.1 -

Her hig school photos would suggest she did.0 -
Power yoga is isometric exercise. Isometric exercises can build appreciable strength. That has been shown. Presumably then, yoga could maybe build some muscle in the right person. Not as much as weight lifting......of course.....but, still, maybe enough to be noticeable.
It could definitely make you look stronger and have improved posture, which would probably make your body look better.0
