Home Teadmill or Gym Treadmill

Ok I have a question and it may sound dumb. On Tues & Thurs my daughter has tennis so by the time I get off work and get finished with that it is kind of late to go to the gym and work out. So I have been going to my sister's house and doing my 30 minutes on her treadmill. I have noticed though I do not burn as many calories as I do on the Gym treadmill. Do you think this makes a difference or exercise is exercise?

I wonder if it's a mental thing - maybe you don't push yourself as hard b/c you're by yourself and don't feel the "peer pressure" like at the gym. I know it makes a difference for me when I work out next to my hubby! I'm competitive so he him being there motivates me to work harder. Just a thought...0

I agree that it's a competitive thing and you want to do better.
Also an HRM would give you more of an accurate reading than what the treadmills say.:drinker:0 -
A few years back I bought a treadmill that was awesome, ($1300) but after a few weeks it really started bothering my lower back. I had to stop using it. I recently started doing the elliptical and so far so good. I do it at the gym on my lunch hour and am considering getting one for home. I have always enjoyed both the gym and home workouts.0

Are you using a HRM or just going by the treadmill reading? The treadmill readings will be different.0

What is HRM?0

I think that if you are focus on your fitness goal, it shouldn't matter where you workout at. 30 mins at home or in the gym is what you put into it.. Stay Focus, and go GET ' EM!0

I agree thanks0 -
Especially if the treadmills are different brands they could have different readings. Are you entering your weight and age into both when you use them? I was told never to use the readings on equipment because they are generally an estimation. And yes, exercise is exercise. You're out there and doing it, and that's what counts.0

I think that you are doing amazing. Most people would just skip the excercise the days they are busy. I don't think it matters if you burn less calories, as long as you are making time for some physical activity. I have a treadmill at home, and I still go to the gym instead if I can. I just like the atmosphere. But I do walk on my treadmill if I was unable to make it to the gym. I would keep doing what you are doing, don't worry to much about how many calories you are burning, its just great to be doing.0

HRM = Heart Rate Monitor
You can calculate calories burned by time excersising and your heart rate during the excersise, and it's more accurate than the readings on machines.0 -

Thank you I appreciate that. Yes I feel guilty if I miss one of my 4 work out days.0 -
HRM stands for Heart Rate Monitor. its a watch and chest strap that you wear during workouts that tracks your heart rate and calculates calories burned, time, distance, pace, etc
Every workout machine will give you a different calorie burn. They are not an exact science, especially if they do not ask for your weight, height, and age. If they don't ask you for this info, then its a worthless number. If they do ask for your stats then its a little better, but not great. An HRM is the best way to track, though even this has its inconsistencies and flaws.0 -
Also how are you measuring your calories HRM or what the machine says? Different machines give different readings. I used to pick one specific elliptical type at my gym because I thought it burned more. When I got my HRM I found it just gave higher readings than the others and I burned about the same on all the treadmills.0

I got mine online. I got Polar which is a good brand. My ft7 was about $100 and worth every penny!0 -
the "calories burned" readings on treadmills are worthless, so don't worry what the treadmill says.
personally, i feel that running on the road provides a much better workout. you can "cheat" when running on a treadmill.0
