I am a 59 year old female. I want to get strong and also flexible. I have lost 100 pounds and would like to tighten up. Where should I start? I don't want to hurt myself by lifting too heavy. I also have back issues but by strengthening my muscles it should help.

I'm 14 years younger than you. And one day, about 4 months ago, I walked into a fitness shop on impulse and told them, "I'm losing weight and I've discovered that I need strength training, too. How do I start?"

And the clerk told me, "Well, you can get dumbbells or resistance tubes." I'd never seen or heard of the tubes before. But I don't drive. The store was 35 minutes walk from my house. And I didn't want to try that walk with a bag of weights. Even light weights can be cumbersome if they're in a shopping bag on your arm instead of in a backpack. I got one tube. Either light or medium. (There are four levels and I'm not sure if the first one is extra-light and the last one is heavy, or if the first one is light and the last one is extra-heavy. I started with the second one.) Found some exercises on the manufacturer's website, others on YouTube. A few weeks later, I was back for the next level tube.

They work. They're versatile. They're also light, inexpensive and easily portable.

I've added other equipment now, including dumbbells, a mat, a stability ball, and a cardio step. But to get started? I'd recommend the tubes.

And are some exercises to get started:

I can also recommend the book Strength Training Exercises for Women by Joan Pagano. It's incredibly detailed and has exercises for all levels.

Maybe start by getting a personal trainer. If you have correct form you shouldn't get hurt. If you start with low weights you shouldn't get hurt.

Also, search for a starting program. it might be a stickie.

Thank you for all the info! I really appreciate you taking the time to write the lengthy post about it. I am excited to get started soon. Will also talk to my chiropractor too as he may have ideas to help with my back problems.

I enjoy using Dumbbells at home, and I use fitness blender videos! Lots of variety/levels of challenge.
