9 lbs first week?

Hi everyone. This is my first week starting working out, attempting to lose weight, but my main goal is to be as healthy as possible. On last Monday I went from about 2-3 sodas a day and lots of junk food to only water and 2 cups of coffee in the morning and eating mainly fresh fruits/vegetables, nothing processed, and watching my calories. I've also started working out doing the 8fit app's daily circuit training in the morning and yoga at night. This app says my calorie intake should be about 1,400 a day and I've been sticking to that. I don't feel sluggish, I feel pretty awesome compared to before I started. In this week though I've dropped 9 lbs and that seems pretty drastic and as much as I'd love to lose my excess weight quickly I want to do it in a safe manner and right. Am I doing something wrong or is this pretty normal?

Well.....you didn't lose 9 pounds of fat your first week. What you did lose is most likely fluid (and probably a pound or two of fat), and fluid fluctuates dramatically. Many times there is a large initial drop then an immediate slow down. Your starting weight may have been taken right after a sodium-rich meal or day, or any number of things.
If you've never noticed before, your weight has likely fluctuated up to +/- 4 pounds in a single day. When not working on a new eating plan or exercise plan or concerned with your weight in general, it's not something you would notice.
Just be aware that you can burn a couple of pounds of fat another week, yet weigh 5 pounds more. Don't freak about that. You will need time to see the real trend because fat burning is a slow process.
If you lose 9 pounds again this week, I'd be surprised.3 -
It's fine, it was probably mostly water.1

Water Weight. But even losing that makes you feel fantastic. Not as bloated. And sluggish. And not to mention the wonders water does for your skin. Anyway CONGRATS on the 9 pound loss!2

It's natural to lose 6-10lbs in your first couple of weeks of working out. Just remember don't be discouraged when the loss drops down a bit.1

Thank you everyone! My mind is at ease now. I figure if I don't do this right from the start I'll be setting myself up for failure. Thank you all again.0

I lost 7lbs in my first week and been on a steady 2/3lbs a week since. Totally normal for a first week mostly water weight1
