Hi! I have been fighting the same 20 lbs for two years and I decided I need to change my plan if I'm going to keep it off. Dieting and jogging is not working. Anyway, I'm 5'6 and 180 right now and I have a decent amount of muscle. I'd like to start lifting but I have literally never done it before and have no idea where to start. I have done MMA and yoga for years, so body weight training is part of my normal routine. I have a gym membership so...now what?? I'm thinking I should build muscle then cut? is that right? How do I do that???

Depending on your level of comfort, you can either start with a good dumbbell routine or a simple 3x/week full body routine: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10332083/which-lifting-program-is-the-best-for-you/p1

And if you are struggle to lose the weight, get a food scale, track daily and work on the nutrition side.
  • I love heavy lifting! I personally sought out a local coach who works with powerlifters, and trained with him for as long as i could afford. Now I get back into it, I just apply what he's taught me at my own gym. Does your gym offer 1:1's with a trainer to get the basic form down? There are a couple books worth looking into for reference; "The New Rules of Lifting for Women" is one "StrongLifts 5x5" is another. Have Fun!!

Until you learn to control the weight, you won't be able to cut. This is calories in calories out I'm afraid.

You can start one of those programs psuLemon pointed you at. The 3 day/wk full body ones are good. Make sure you understand "progressive overload" and how many macros you need for your goals. Try somewhere around 1 g/lb bodyweight of protein, it's a nice round number you can remember and is enough for both bulking and cutting and will help you with your CICO.
