Large tonsils & working out

Hello,

Wasn't sure where to post this, but I have very large tonsils and my dentist really thinks I should get them removed. I notice that when say running or jogging that my tonsils get dry and I get a pain in my throat. I've always wondered if I struggled more than most people doing these exercises because of my large tonsils. Has anyone had their tonsils removed and noticed a difference with breathing easier while working out or if it would help me to convince my doctor that I should get them removed? Around April I had a nasty staph infection on them which made it very difficult to eat/swallow and before that I was sick for about a month or so.

I would definitely just get them removed if they gave me any discomfort! Leave the better breathing and other things to chance because in all honestly...that surprise on top of the pain loss would just be amazing!

When I was 19 I started having issues with my tonsils. Every 3 months I would be sick for a week. Makes it hard to work out or deal with every day life crap. After getting 11 infections in about a year and a half, I got them yanked out. Was quite a painful recovery, but once it was over, I never had issues again. That was 5 years ago. Just something to think about if you start getting chronic infections.

It is not easy to get a doctor to just remove them anymore. Most insurance companies require you having strep at least 3x in a year for them to consider it. I didnt get mine taken out until I was 24. It was living hell. I do breath better but I am not sure that I would do it again if I had to.

Luckily I am still under my dad's insurance for now and he has good coverage. I will have a talk with him and ask about it and then maybe go to my regular doctor and see what they say. I've noticed the difficulty breathing while running/jogging since middle school for me and so I've always for the most part just avoided it because of that. I wasn't overweight at the time either, so honestly I do believe my tonsils affect my quality of life. Not sure if they interfere with my sleep much though since I sleep on my side, but I do tend to drool an awful lot...not sure if that is a bad thing. Just seems like my dentist is pretty persistent about getting me to talk to my doctor about it which would make sense since they look in my mouth a lot more than when I get my physicals or checkups at the doctor.

SERIOUSLY AMERICA - VOTE FOR SOMEONE THAT WILL GIVE YOU A NHS! IT'S THE BEST THING ABOUT THE UK!
I couldn't live in a country where health care is a business whose primary motive is money, I mean really you're not gonna get the best care that way.

Sorry for the rant, for all I know all the americans on this site want an NHS, it just angers me when you see stories like this where people find it hard to get the care they need, even WITH medical insurance! Over here you get tonsilitus 3 times in your life and they remove your tonsils xD

Sorry for the ramble again, basically, if you really are having trouble with your tonsils and you need to convince your doctor to let you get surgery, just exaggerate millions as to how much it's affecting your life.
    Or marry someone in Canada.

Yeah, it does honestly seem like you do have to exaggerate sometimes to get what you need. I guess I do feel tired, but after all these years of having large tonsils I've sorta gotten used to it. Which is sad, but yeah my dentist seems to think I'd be preventing future problems as an adult and why wait for another infection and being sick again for another month? I'll just go with difficulty breathing as an excuse and lack of energy, if it weren't for breathing through my nose as well, I'd notice it a lot more.
