I am new to MFP & wondering if I am trying to kick start weight loss if I should be lowering my calories to less than they suggest? 2lbs a week seems like really slow progression.

2lbs per week is the max you should be aiming for really. More than that and you can risk losing a lean muscle and undernourishing yourself. Weight loss doesn't need to be "kickstarted".7

2lbs a week is the fastest and only for those very obese. Everyone else loses at 1lbs or less. I've lost all my weight at 0.5lbs per week and at 0.25lbs a week.
You need to adjust your expectations. They seem unrealistic.

There's no max target for weight loss - as long as you are eating a balanced diet. It gets difficult to maintain balance on low calories. It depends how scientific and diligent you intend to be. I lost about 1.5kg per week for the first few weeks - but I gradually upped my calorie intake as I got closer to my target weight. It's the end of the diet and maintenance strategy that makes the difference between success and failure. Having said that it does depend how much you've got to lose. I lost 30kg.1

1% of body weight is the max you should aim for (but even that can be too aggressive if you have a healthy BMI) otherwise you're getting into too much lean mass burning territory. Don't worry it all adds up, the trick is not to crash diet otherwise you end up yoyoing as it's unsustainable and miserable. Good luck and I hope you find a sustainable pace of loss. x2

2 lbs per week is by no means "very slow", it's actually very aggressive for anyone who isn't obese, you need to adjust your expectations.1

Your expectations are unrealistic. 2 Lbs per week is a big loss...it's actually pretty aggressive. Crashing your diet to go faster is a pretty bad idea and pretty unhealthy.1 -
No you shouldn't. 2 pounds per week may seem slow to you, but it is really quite aggressive.1

2lbs a week is very aggressive and you shouldn't aim for that unless you are very overweight/obese0

If you try to cut your calories too low, you will end up giving up in a week or two. Feeling hungry and deprived is not sustainable in the long term and losing weight is a long term proposition. You need to find a balance between what you need to be satisfied while still losing weight. If you don't find that balance, as soon as you stop watching your calories, you will gain the weight back, and if you are like most people, you'll gain more than you lost. Don't think of this as a diet but as a lifestyle change. Try to figure out what changes in your diet and activity level you can continue to do for the rest of your life. If it is too extreme, it won't last.3

Weight loss takes years.
It took me several years to lose 130 pounds through diet and exercise. fast forward and it has taken me nearly a year to lose 25ish - and I have 25ish more I want to lose. The time passes either way and it is easier to maintain a slow loss. Take it from one who has done both but only been truly successful as the turtle.

I think it depends on how overweight you are. For instance, if your weight is noticeably affecting your mobility, over 2lbs/wk may not be that difficult, even. If you're trying to get from a size 6 to a size 4, 2lbs/wk may not even be possible unless you live on the treadmill and have an Adderall rx.2

Thank you all for the support and advice! I have still been sticking to it and I am realizing that isn't as slow as I thought. Slow and steady will hopefully win this weight loss race!5
