Green Smoothie Breakfast!

I just shared this on my personal newsfeed, and just realized I should share it with the community.

For several years now, starting back when I had 70 lbs to lose, I've had a green smoothie for breakfast almost every morning. Definitely one of my weight management "tips!" I don't want to say "weight loss", because it's just part of my ongoing healthy lifestyle, including maintenance when I'm at my healthy weight.

Anyhow, really easy, very tasty. High speed blender highly recommended. (I have a Vitamix.)

- One 6 oz. box of greens of your choice (I recommend starting out with something mild like organic spinach, and experiment from there)
- One bag of frozen fruit, defrosted overnight in the fridge (right in the blender itself is easiest), my favorite is organic mixed berries, although mango chunk or peach slices are also yummy.
- 2-3 scoops of protein powder of your choice

That's it! Super easy! Greens, fruit, protein powder. 400-500 calories, pour it into a blender bottle, and carry it with you to work, sip it all morning long.

Lots of variations you can do, too. You can add in any supplement you might want, like wheatgrass powder, maca root powder, whatever floats your boat.

The one thing I do caution about: A friend of mine tried this out, and went nuts the first few smoothies adding in all different kinds of fruit. It ended up just being kind of weird, like the smoothie didn't know what it wanted to be. I think he added apple, banana, orange, strawberries, and a couple of other fruits, all into one smoothie. He said it was definitely over-kill.

Also, you don't have to use frozen fruit. I do that for convenience. It's pre-packaged, and easy to scan the barcode into MFP to track the nutrition. Same with the greens. The packaging makes it easy for me to log. But feel free to use fresh produce, mix it up, have fun!

I gotta say, my green smoothie breakfast has become a lifestyle habit for me, and it's a mainstay of my routine. Easy way for me to start the day right, and it prevents those late-day cravings I used to have when I skipped breakfast, and was overweight.

I love mine! I make it in my Cuisinart food processor. Fills a 24 oz shaker cup. It's quite filling and I eat it very, very slowly.

Glad it works for you. I personally found that eating breakfast causes me to be more hungry throughout the day, so now I skip it.

not to be the dick but one bag of fruit is not really a measurement...i have a 10 pound bag of blueberries... and to put a calorie amount on it with no proper measurements with so much variation between protein powders and different fruits can be dangerous around here lol

I tried this a few years ago and I found that liquids don't affect mu hunger. Personally it was wasted calories but I'm sure it works for many people.

Well, this isn't a meant to be a recipe, but a lifestyle tip - just something that works for me.

If you'd like a specific recipe, I'd be happy to share one.

My morning smoothie is usually about 50% protein and 50% carbs, but that varies depending on whether I feel I need more protein, more fruit, etc. Sometimes I only use half a box of greens. Sometimes I use half a bunch of chard, or half a bunch of collard greens instead of boxed greens. How big is a bunch? *shrug* I would have to weigh it.

I'm just sharing a general tool.
