Pretty frustrated this morning. I've been wanting to go for a run for a while, but I hurt my knee about 3 weeks ago. I was hoping it would be fine today (especially since I've been eating poorly and putting on weight :-( ). No running. About 10 steps in, I was having pain. Anyone have any good suggestions for workouts for bad knees?

I live in a very small town with just a seasonal pool and the only gym is at the high school and it's closed for the summer.

yeah, let it heal until it no longer hurts. And not knowing the nature of the injury its impossible to suggest anything. What is wrong with it? This may be a time to focus on eating more than exercising.

Talk to your doctor about water aerobics.

I've been having pain in my knees and basically have just been sticking to walking, low impact aerobics videos, and I will also do 30 Day Shred, but modify it so my knees don't hurt while doing it. Are you able to take any more than 10 steps?

If you can only take 10 steps and your knee hurts just walking my recommendation is you better see an orthopedic specialist. Please whatever you do even though they may be well-intentioned don't take advice from people on this website. Their suggestions maybe valid in their own opinion but without knowing your medical condition they can be giving you some information that may lead to serious damage.

Walking is fine, it was the 10 steps I tried to run that I experienced the pain. Thank you everyone for taking time to respond. Unfortunately, I have no insurance, so seeing a specialist is WAY out there. I'll continue to just walk and rest it for a few more weeks, and go from there.

Find other ways to get your cardio exercise in. If your joints hurt you want them to heal 100% before working out again. You risk the chance of causing permanent damage.

Cycling? I had knee pain as well and thought cycling was out the question, but tried it and whatever knee pain I had did not effect the ability to turnth pedals :-)

Ice your knee often. Its best to see a othopedic specialist. My othopedic has me using a stationary bike to build up muscle around the knee. One of these days I have to have surgery on mine.
If you have a knee brace wear it once in awhile . Too often will weaken the muscles around the knee. Wish you the best.

Swimming is best for knee pain. Dislocated my knee and docs advice was to wade in the sea. Salt water is good for muscles and injuries. If no sea near you get Epson salts and soak in a bath.
Non impact exercise until it heals.

Definitely consult a doctor and/or physical therapist. What works for some may not work for you due to the nature of your injury. I'm currently dealing with a patellar cartilage issue and cycling hurts, even though it was fine for a previous meniscus tear. Different issues call for different exercises (or rest).

It depends on why your knee hurts. See an orthopedist, get a diagnosis, get a physical therapy referral, do what the PT recommends.

My knee hurts. My rowing double partner's knee hurts. We've seen the same orthopedist. My friend gets gel shots periodically, and PT assigned pool and weight exercises to strengthen particular muscles. I had one cortisone shot 2 years ago, and PT assigned exercises to improve hip mobility, plus taught me better ways to walk and climb stairs, to reduce knee stress. Friend has "the worst case of kneecap arthritis (our orthopedist) ever saw". I have a torn meniscus and joint osteoarthritis.

What's my point? Find out what you have. Get treated for that.

You can always exercise other areas of your body while waiting for your knee to heal. Do pushups, situps, leg raises, butt lifts, tricep dips, etc. Strengthen your body so you're less likely to injure it.
