Is it okay to bury a pet in the back yard?

I lost the love of my doggy life a few years ago. I had to have him cremated to be able to bury him in our yard, he was a Mastiff. I know it sounds silly but it just made me feel better to know he was still near us.0

No idea if its legal but don't care either way. Its my property, I'll do what I want with it. But with that said I cremate the animals first and then bury the ashes.0

Why would it be illegal? Animals die all the time. No one goes out into the woods collecting critters and cremating them.... and trust me, they don't cremate themselves. It's not littering... dead animals are 100% biodegradable.0

P.S. My gerbil died when I was a kid. It was winter in Wisconsin so the ground was frozen. My mom flushed it.
Not too long before that she had also flushed the litter of babies that magically appeared in the cage with our two "boy" gerbils. Funny how quickly one of them died after having babies. :indifferent:0 -

I've been a veterinary technician for awhile now. It is not legal to bury your pets in your backyard in some states. When an animal is euthanized or comes in DOA, we always offer cremation options or give the owner the option of taking the body home for burial. We give this option whether it is legal or not. Some can't afford cremation. Others want to bring the body home. Who's going to know?0

@Charlie - Legally - check with your local laws. Really - If you live on an open piece of land (and you own it) and you are not cramped up in a sub division then it's possible that you can do what you want.
The cleanest choice is pet cremation and then burial or spreading of the ashes on your property.
What kind of pet are we discussing here?0 -

This is what our vet does too. We always opt to take them home. We have always had a small "zoo" and literally have a pet cemetery in one corner of our farm.0 -

I recently moved from an area in Virgina where I (we) owned 8 acres of land Mostly wooded. I would have had no issues with burying anything on my property: gerbil, cat, dog, horse, ex-wife. But now I live in a cramped sub-division on less than 1/2 an acre. I would almost bet that their are ordiances (or HOA rules) that forbid the burying of animals on my current property.0
