Double counting calories with Apple Watch activity?

I have mfp on my watch, set at daily active lifestyle. At the gym I put in calories based upon length of time on the elliptical and what the machine said I burned. Am I double counting my active lifestyle calories if I set an Apple Watch workout to walk the dog, for example? As soon as mfp registers my 300-400 calorie workout at the gym all of my bonus activity points from long distance walking go away.

Thanks!

I'm linked to my Samsung app and yes it doubles so I ignore the step count on gym days so I know I won't go over calories

No, it does not double count. MFP will only count burn from one source for a given period of time. So if you log activity, say elliptical from 1pm-2pm, then MFP uses your log activity for that hour and the Apple activity for the other 23 hours in the day.

So when I use my Apple Watch to log a workout it will show up for instance a 60 min walk 480 calories burned then it has 400+ calories adjustment for walking over 10,000 steps. But that 60 min walk is part of the 10,000 steps so to me that seems like it's double counting and giving me more calories burned than it should.

I think mfp must be different for some people as I can't log my exercise by times I have to put in the length of time I was on a treadmill as xxx minutes then xxx calories burnt, my Samsung app will then also say xxx steps taken and give extra calories so it doubles up

I do think it double counts in some cases. I'm sure in the past I have set my Garmin watch to running mode and Garmin Connect sent MFP the running calories plus the same amount again as general activity/walking calories. I'll test again at the weekend when I go running.

I use mfp for food logging and my fitbit ( in your case apple) for all activity logging.
    Less chance to double up.
