i'VE NOTiCED THAT ALOT OF RECIPES THAT ARE POSTED ON HERE THAT CONTAIN BACON.. MANY HAVE MENTIONED TO USE TURKEY BACON. WHICH TO SUPRISE IS ACTUALLY WORSE OFF THAN GOING WITH REGULAR BACON. THEY BOTH CONTAIN THE SAME AMOUNT IN CALORIES BUT IF YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED TURKEY BACON HAS A VERY HIGH AMOUNT OF SODIUM!!

THEY DiD ACTUALLY GO OVER THIS RECENTLY ON OPERA..

It depends on the type of bacon you are talking about.

    but going on calorieking.com

    I just did a comparison

Regular bacon (0.3 oz, one piece):

    Calories 46
    Total Fat 3.6g 5%
    Sat. Fat 1.2g 6%
    Trans Fat 0g
    Cholesterol 9mg 3%
    Sodium 196mg 8%
    Total Carbs. 0.1g 0%
    Dietary Fiber 0g 0%
    Sugars 0g
    Protein 3.1g
    Calcium 0.9mg
    Potassium 48mg

    Jennie-O Turkey Bacon(0.5 oz, 1 piece):

    Calories 35
    Total Fat 3g 5%
    Sat. Fat 1g 5%
    Cholesterol 10mg 3%
    Sodium 170mg 7%
    Total Carbs. 0g 0%
    Dietary Fiber 0g 0%
    Sugars 0g
    Protein 2g
    Calcium 0mg

Not really sure it's true. Although they are pretty close, so I don't think switching from regular to turkey makes that big of a difference.

i am just glad they have turkey bacon and turkey sausage ~ no piggies for me!
  • I bought Jennie-O- Turkey bacon once and never ate it again. I love their turkey burgers but the bacon was terrible.

It also depends what sort of bacon you get. Back bacon is surprisingly *NOT* bad for you. Then on the other hand, there's fatback bacon which is absolutely delicious, but TERRIBLE for you. Usually in the US we mention streaky bacon which comes from pig bellies. Different cuts have different compositions of muscle and fat.
  • I don't eat any product made with pork and so turkey bacon was a great substitute for me and my DD who loves them as well. There is only one brand that I eat and that is the Louis Rich ones.
  • I bought the Jennie-O 95% fat free and it has 20 calories a slice and about .75g of fat.

Not to bad. Though I don't eat it by itself it's usually on a turkey sandwich....

I LOVE anything turkey - bacon, ground turkey, turkey sausage....yummy! And I get Jimmy Dean turkey bacon, usually, and it's about the same as the Jenny and tastes amazing!

I love the Jennie o turkey bacon, although I have recently wondered about my sodium intake so this certainly was a trigger post to me. I guess I have been conditioned to think that real bacon is bad and turkey bacon is better...................................will have to pick my battles from now on...lol:laugh:

Okay, I have had a VERY disappointing time with turkey bacon. I am used to buying the less sodium oscar myer bacon, which is 35 cals a slice. I picked up turkey bacon without looking at the label, thinking it would be less. But NOPE, it was exactly the same. :grumble:

So turkey bacon, in my opinion - is just not worth it.
