Read the posts that are stickied at the top of the page. They pretty much explain it all. After you've digested that info, come back with questions.

Buy and use a food scale to weigh all your solid food. Measure all your liquids. Spend time finding accurate database entries. Log accurately and consistently.

Just jump into it. Make the commitment and act on it. This isn't something that requires any prep other than getting your mind right. You can start right now if you want to. I'm not sure how far you have to go, but my main motivations were...

Does living with diabetes for the rest of your life sound good to you?
Do you like running short on breath when just walking around, or sweating when everyone else is fine?
Do you like feeling like a bloated roly poly every night when going to bed?
Would you be happy leaving your family early because of heart disease or other obesity-related condition?
Have you ever scanned the crowd in a meeting or gathering and realized that you are the fattest person in the room?
Do you like it that every single piece of clothing you own is either uncomfortable or looks horrible?

You don't have to eat 100% clean every day, nor do you have to be perfect right now. Make small but meaningful changes over the next couple of days/weeks and you'll get there.

For example, cut out all sodas and other calorie-laden beverages starting today and start learning about calorie targets and portion sizes. Buy a digital kitchen scale and measuring cups. Next week, try to cut out bad desserts, and gradually start working yourself towards your new daily calorie targets, etc. The week following, try to hit your actual calorie target every day and maybe start walking more or trying out a new exercise routine.

Before you know it, you'll be eating clean and feeling great!

It's easy to start put your details in to mfp set a goal, a reasonable rate of loss with which I mean don't make the deficit too big.

Start logging what you eat now, a food scale would be good for accuracy. Look at your diary after a week and try and make small changes to hit your deficit. It's not complicated, you don't need to change what you eat just how much.

If you have that down you may want to make changes to improve nutrition but that is entirely up to you.

You may also want to add some exercise of choice for health, again not necessary to lose weight but may make it easier as you get to eat those calories back ( although the advise is not all as the calories given are usually over inflated, 50-75% is recommended).

Then just stick to it and be patient the weight will come off.
