Hi, I love outdoor running /jogging but unfortunately it's not too safe, so my lovely hubby bought me a huge treadmill. Now I need help on the best way to use it. Its sooooo different from outdoor running and I'm really struggling to enjoy it. I don't seem to be able to go more than a mile without stopping. What's wrong with me and please help..x

Does your treadmill allow you to do inclines? Change things up if you need to. Run, jog, sprint for moments at a time adjusting speed. Go higher inclines and slower speeds or run (if you are comfortable and able to do so with good form).
Personally, I have been working on getting a mile done in a shorter amount of time. 6 months ago I was at a slow 20 minute mile, leaving me out of breath; while now if I try hard enough I can do it in 12 and feel great (yay!). My main goal is 10 minutes or less one day. I like to do intervals and hills so mess around with the inclines and speeds for about 45 to 90 minutes when not focused on that. I think it may help you too. Push your limits and explore what the treadmill has to offer.
There are also other types of things you can do if you look it up at slower paces. Backwards walking, side steps, etc...
It's always raining here so I go to the gym to run on the treadmill. If given the opportunity to go outside on a nice day too, I enjoy that too. You learn to love the treadmill and other cardio equipment and although not nearly as nice as being outdoors, it still has some pros to it.
I hope this helps a little bit!0 -
It's a different feeling and takes some getting used to. As someone who spent many years running outdoors I never thought I could feel comfortable on a treadmill. But for the last 10 or so, it's been either treadmill or nothing. When that's the choice facing you, you find it's not so bad. Give it time and do some interval type workouts and you may find it more acceptable.0

Sometimes finding something else to focus on while running can be helpful. I picked a TV series that's intriguing but not so gripping that I'll be tempted to watch it when I'm not on a treadmill/indoor bike. It has just enough going on that I focus more on the show than on my workout.

I find it harder to run on the TM, so usually I start at a pace that is significantly slower than I would run outdoors. I gradually increase the pace as I run. How quickly I increase depends on how far I am running. Usually for the warmup I increase every 1/4 mile, then every mile or so. If I'm running really long, it may be every two miles. Sometimes I change with every song, running faster on the fast songs and slower on the slower ones. As I get the muscles warmed up, the faster paces feel more comfortable. I do most of my runs at an easy pace, generally never getting up to the pace I run outdoors. Once a week or so I do intervals or a tempo run. As others have said, using the incline can make it more interesting, but I need to be careful with that because doing too much incline tends to get me injured on the TM.
For short runs I usually just use music. For longer ones I'll do videos to make the time pass more quickly. (My longest TM runs have been 20 miles - so about 3.5 hours.) You might try podcasts or books on tape.1 -

I like to watch TV. I actually hate running outside -- it's so boring to me! I don't understand how other people keep their minds occupied. Normally, I like to watch cooking shows, or shows like Bizarre Foods, since they give me some motivation to work towards while I burn off calories for treats.0

I have to watch something. Usually start a series on Netflix and see how many miles I can do before a episode ends.
I usually play with the incline during it as well for the heck of it and to change things up.

I can't do more than a couple of miles on a treadmill before becoming completely demoralized and bored out of my mind. I can't stay off the trails.
Varying speeds and inclines helps a little.1 -

Running outside on hard pavement next to roads or in my neighborhood is pure torture. Not to mention the perverts and weirdos... But running on dirt trails in the hills in a nearby nature preserve is heavenly, though. Very meditative and relaxing - good for the body and soul.3 -
Maybe put together an adrenaline playlist, or download some ebooks. Anything to distract the boredom. I myself prefer to adjust the speed and incline every 30 seconds.0

I use my treadmill everyday I love it, I find it easier than running outside xi listen to music when I run plus I do interval training on mine x1
