Not quite sure what you are asking... but walking to me implies a fairly level surface like a road, or sidewalk. Hiking would include climbing up and down hills, over rougher terrain and would require more effort... more effort equates to a significant difference in calories.

Hiking is typically done on varied terrain trails...around my parts, it's done in the mountains so you usually have substantial elevation gains. I usually also have a pack and the trail often has obstacles like boulders or fallen trees, etc that you have to maneuver. A typical hike for me is about 4 hours at the minimum...often they are all day affairs.

This is the La Luz trail...one of my favorite hikes:

Hiking is a more vigorous form of walking...when I think walking I think:

    2 things

    1. Walk is generally prepared/groomed terrain, relatively flat
    2. Hike is generally unprepared ground with extreme elevation changes... And you should probably have gear(food/water/pack)

So, since you've increased your effective body weight and the level of difficulty of the terrain... You'll likely burn more calories.

When I go hiking, it usually involves rough trails, jumping/climbing over obstacles, occasional climbing up rocks, a mountainous incline, and sometimes wet/slippery surfaces. It's more strenuous than a stroll around the lake at the local park so it burns more calories.

Ugh, why can't I see everything else I typed? My walk/hike is at the same place, a oval track. The issue I am having is as I log them, it shows the same location but with different calorie counts. Also on the ones that were labeled as walks, it does not register the actual mile I walk, it says 0.0 mile. I do know the difference between a walk and a hike, it might be that I thought MMS would seen it via the track it sees me walking.

What type of device are you using to track / log them? If you're walking on an oval track why would you log one as a walk and another as a hike?

Samsung s6 for both, I am using right now. And as far a why, well I think I can blame my glasses or just not paying close enough attention when logging it in.

This exactly. Is your phone, or device telling you what it thinks you're doing. Is it GPS enabled, or is it just gauging intensity.

I tell my Garmin what I'm doing, and it gauges calories for the activity. My Misfit on the other hand guesses based on intensity. It usually does a really good job of guessing..
