Hello everyone! I'm a CS major, so I tend to sit in one spot at work and at school - and unfortunately because of my love for computers, programming, video games and general internet socialization, I have found myself a bit heavier than I wanted to be as of late...
However, I have now resolved to do something about this! And that is the first step. :)

Welcome!!! I am in the same situation as you. BUT it can be done.
  • You have come to the right place. I find this website to be very helpful and motivating. It is like playing a game. I love to beat my calorie and workout goals each day. It makes it fun and gives purpose to your workouts.

Welcome to MFP! As a long-time programmer myself, I know how difficult it can be to actually get moving...even harder to actually eat well! I've always wanted to just get the food as quickly as possible, and just get back to the machines.

Good luck on your journey here, and in your profession!

Good for you for making a change!! My bf is also a CS major, has a desk job and only does the things you mentioned when he gets home from work. It drives me insane but he doesn't seem to care about anything else.

That can be a difficult lifestyle to get out of so kudos for trying to change it!

We sound a lot alike!! I work in IT so i sit on my butt in a cubicle farm ALL Day too.....and at night, I love my MMO's :)
I finally decided to join a gym ...so now I go there for an hour and then I go home to raid!

Little things can make a big difference.... instead of bringing a bunch of snack crap to the computer, I replaced it with things like turkey jerkey and protein shakes... You can do it!

First let me say congrats to the 108lbs MissMaryMac33!
Second, I'm in the same boat as the OP. I work as a Network Engineer and spend a lot of time in a chair.
I'm resolving myself to getting into better shape. Walking my dog will be my first form of exercise!

You just need to make little changes and it starts to get easier to make the big ones.

I work all day in an office at a computer and when I work from home I sometimes walk no further than to the fridge and back. Or at least that was the case before I started here.
Now I make the effort to walk a few blocks to get my lunch. Or if I am at home I break off for lunch and get out of the house and exercise.
A day like today I would have done no exercise but have fitted in an hours walking so far and may chose to skip a taxi tonight and walk another half hour.

I'm also a programmer. Yep, it's the sitting at my desk all day that caused me to gain a lot of the weight I have. After a long day of straining my brain and my fingers, I used to feel too tired to do anything but sit in front of the TV or computer or a video game or curl up with a book at night.

Now, I've found exercise and what a difference that makes. It's my stress release after my work day. Boot camp, CrossFit, Olympic lifting - all great things.

    Best of luck to you!

I'm a quality assurance anaylyst for the Dept of Defense so I feel your pain flying a desk all day. Oh, and I love games too (call of duty, madden) so i spend way too much time sitting on my butt at night too .

I work in Cyber Security (have done a little programming but it could never be my profession), sit in a cube all day and also used to live in Chicago, feel free to add me.
  • Wow, thank you everyone for all the support! This is so nice of you guys! :)
I started my little weight loss journey by biking or walking to work - it's a 1.3 mile trek, so a bit daunting at first, but since the bus around here is late so often I thought it'd be worth a try - and it's no problem now, and I lost a few pounds since starting that at the beginning of the summer anyway! And that little bit of motivation sent me back to the university's gym - which is new, beautiful, and awesome.
And yay for MMO players! I used to play WoW, but I had to stop during the school year (otherwise, I was going to see a major dip in my grades at an already-tough school, haha)...I was considering making restarting my account a reward for losing some amount of weight, though! :D

My coach, Jen Waak of movefitfun.com is a genius at rehab & restoring IT folks & other Keyboard Athletes to full mobility and energetic lives. Check out her website for free helpful tips and an online course specific to the brains/bodies of those who sit at work stations for a living. I am lucky enough to live in Seattle and train with her one on one. Check out my ticker for the progress she's helped me to make.

WoW addict and Systems Administrator here. I work at a University in a cube farm all day and plop my butt down at home and either watch TV or play console/PC games at night. I started the Couch to 5k program, and it's helping me a lot. It also helps that it is only 30 minutes 3 times a week. I want to add Crossfit in there once I finish the Couch to 5k program. I follow both subreddits as well:
