You can lose without exercise. You have to be careful to stay within your calorie limit though. I want to lose 40 lbs. I lost the first 20 lbs just through diet. (I lost 26 lbs but got off track and regained 5lbs) When you don't have much to lose it is hard to lose quickly. My calorie goal for 2 lbs/week is 1200 and for 1 lb/week is 1210-1220. Adding exercise can move things along but it isn't necessary if you are patient. I try to walk/run at lunch with a co-worker and find that helps quite a bit.

for 2 lbs a week if its 1200,then 1lb a week would be 1700(a lb is 500 calories).

Yes, but if the poster is getting these numbers from MFP, the 1200-calorie minimum recommendation can mean that MFP says 1200 when asked for a recommendation for losing 2-lbs a week any time the NEAT is 2200 or below. If 1 lb a week recommendation from MFP is 1210-1220, the calculated NEAT is 1710-1720, and the 1200 number won't really result in a 2 lb a week loss.

if they are really short or sedentary or elderly then yeah I agree. but I dont see where 10-20 calories will make a big difference.

Yes, that is it. If I input a 2lb/week loss or 1lb/week in MFP, I still basically get 1200. So without exercise I have to reduce my expectations so I still lose safely
