People keep telling me that I shouldn't have any problem losing weight eating a mostly vegan diet, but it's just not true lol. I have been eating the same way for 15 years. I have compounding issues being on Seroquel, which makes you gain weight and having an irregular thyroid that goes up and down also.

non fat vegan here.. it has nothing to do with the thyroid or seroquil... vegan or vegetarian doesn't mean healthy.. vegan is an ethical stance against not consuming animal slaughter. and meat doesn't make you fat. junk food does.. hence u being overweight. also starches!!! rice, corn, pasta, potatoes.. im sure u eat plenty of that.. most junk food has no animal products.. just a bunch of chemicals..

cut out all the white foods and replace with non starchy foods (actual veggies) and voila.. wont be fat any longer!!

Fat vegetarian reporting in! Sadly, there is plenty of yummy food, both calorie-dense and nutrient-dense that can put you into calorie surplus. It's not 'just' white foods or starches, though sure they contribute. I love almost all cheeses (any non-'processed' cheese anyhow, including the orange ones), and stir-fry sauces and salad dressings can pack on the calories before I even get to the other stuff.

However, I'm more than halfway to goal (63.4 lbs lost, 61.6 to go) and I've done it eating moderate amounts of starches, desserts, etc. I've cut back on portions, but I haven't cut any foods out.

Not sure If I count but Fat ex vegetarian here. I dont eat alot of meat but I do eat some now. However when I was just a vegetarian it did NOT impact my weight, eating meat also did not impact my weightloss. Eating too much is what got me here, and eating less (including the foods I love) is what has allowed me to lose 25 lbs the past three months.

I think no matter what type of diet, you need portion control. If you eat too much you gain. I tend to eat around 1000 calories and am not losing weight and am under doctor supervision so I seem to an exception to the rule.

I wouldn't class myself as a vegetarian because I eat fish, my problem is comfort eating and I can graze my way through a packet of biscuits as easy as a lot of fruit.

Beg to differ with Tiffani's reply on the 23rd of June.
A sluggish thyroid most certainly affects metabolism and the way our body metabolises and uses the food ingested.
If you are eating a Vegetarian Diet ( Yes I am one and also suffering hypothyroidism), and eating largely a plant based diet, then you will lose weight.
If you have indeed been consuming starchy foods, vegetables and high fat foods, then your body will store these as fat.
As a trained nurse and an MFP user for 665 days I have a wealth of knowledge.
It is true Seroquel causes weight gain because your brain is triggering the appetite centres. I would suggest talking to your Doctor about an alternative drug.
I am happy to support you in this journey.

I have Hashimoto's, which is where my thyroid is up and down all the time. However, even when it's up, and I should lose weight, but I eat a ton of avacado toast, wash it down with wine, and follow that up with chocolate, I gain. Diet still plays a part, and if you eat like a child, like I often do, even as a vegetarian, you will gain weight. Keep in mind that poptarts, croissants, muffins, cheese fries, and onion rings are technically vegetarian too lol

I'm sorry, I just realized you said plant based diet, not vegetarian. I'm half asleep lol. I agree with you
