To exercise or not to exercise...

I can't decide if I want to work out today or not. I want to because it's super good for me, but I don't have enough calories racked up in what I have planned to eat today to be able to meet my net if I do exercise. Isn't that why there's a deficit created on here anyway? Ugh! So conflicted...

MFP already has you set to a deficit. Just plan on having a snack once you workout. You won't regret it!

EXERCISE! then you have more calories for a small snack
  • LOL....I'm asking myself the same thing! I think I'm going to take the day...I burn so many calories in a week anyways and I'm going to try and take a nap. That is, if my 3 kids will cooperate for me:)

So do the exercise and have a snack. This ain't rocket surgery,,, if you're 200 calories under net for one lousy day 'cause you did a little biking you're not going to lock into the dreaded "Starvation mode" and gain back eleventeen pounds or anything.

What do you want to do? I'm a biker meself,,,
  • I would never not exercise just b/c I was worried about my calorie defecit. If you feel up to it, do it. Have a protein shake after or a handful of almonds and some string cheese if you feel you "should" be eating more.

I WANT to exercise....but I don't want to worry about not meeting my NET calories! I hate having to eat, eat, eat because I'm not that darn hungry! I know dozens of people who eat a sensible diet and exercise who don't calorie count and are skinny! Why can't I do the same? Very rarely do I find myself wanting to stuff my face with food. I only gained so much weight from eating so much fast food, not paying attention to portion and not exercising. I'm learning to get all those under control, but I can't handle the stress of constantly having to meet my net calories...which the stress alone is likely hindering a few pounds on me. GRRRRRR!!!!

I understand it's not rocket science....but this happens a lot. I snack throughout the day and exercise. Then I have all these leftover calories to meet come days end and it's impossible to eat them without having something moderately unhealthy. I'm making the best choices I can all day long and feel as though I'm punishing myself because I have so much to make up for at the end of the day!
  • What net are you trying to reach? How many calories do you anticipate burning during exercise?
I honestly never have this problem, my net should be 1200-1300 cal and i rarely have trouble meeting that. I wish that were the case some days.

So also if my net is 2400, I should be making myself eat 2400 calories each day? I could see easily coming 500 or more under and I thought that was okay.. So I would be in the same boat as you, plus excercise on top of it.. I mean heck I could easily go and have had subway for lunch like the rest of my family did my brothers sub alone was 1000 calories from the website, I showed him cuz he's trying to lose weight too, he's like but it's soo good.. lol

So I told him to keep his yummy smelling sandwich away from me and went and had a 210 lean cuisine for lunch :P

If it's not my rest day, I'm working out. Well... Unless my body is telling me not to. However, it just seems like your head is saying "Ugh! I don't feel like trying to find food to eat to meet my net." I usually eat nuts or some natural peanut butter when I have a bunch of calories left and am not feeling very hungry. My net is 1200 so I try to eat all of my exercise calories.

I workout at night after work. If I'm planning an intense workout and have a general idea of how many calories I'll burn, I'll make a conservative estimate and plan it ahead of time so I'm not eating a ton of calories at the end of the day.

It's perfectly okay to be under the goal on some days and over on some days, but it should average out to the ideal. I don't "count" my calories ever. I enter what eat and enter my exercise. Sometimes I'm over (even way over) and sometimes I'm under (rarely way under) and I'm at a healthy weight. I lost most of the weight before even joining this site or counting anything (exercise or food).

That's really calming to hear! And good for you! How did you lose the weight?

I try to reach 1200. When I do my cardio I burn about 650 calories. I realize that planning better would be more beneficial, but even so, I can't eat 1,800 calories healthy food every day...or the days I do cardio anyway. Sure it's easy to rack up calories when I eat crappy food, but that's what I'm trying to avoid. That's what I'm trying to change. That's one big reason why I'm even on here is to make a better lifestyle for me. And obviously people find ways to meet their nets with good food, but for ME, I haven't found it yet....not every day anyway.
