You're over your calorie limit after lunch - what do YOU do?

Well I am new to mfp but this has happened to me a few times, I am still getting used to the whole counting bit. So when I go way over I try to burn off some calories and eat a light dinner. I don't find salad very filling but I love some steamed veggies and I'll do like a half cup of rice and really focus on being good for the next couple days so I feel like it kinda cancels out.0

Have a reg dinner, burn some extra calories move move move !!
and start over tomorrow0 -
I would work out after work as usual and thereby earn another 500 (my usual) calories. Then I'd eat my usual dinner and not worry about it. Sometimes I go over. No biggie.0

Make a nice chunky vegetable soup......keep low on the salt, flavour with herbs/garlic, and don't worry about it. It's not like you are doing it daily!! Lifestyle change.....does not stop you having a high calorie meal once for a special occasion!! Lifestyle change means your'e not having a high calorie/unhealthy meal every day.0

I don't go over my goal calories hardly ever. But the few times I did I was still far from my maintenance calories, so I didn't sweat it.
In your shoes I'd try to fit in a decent workout and then have a really light dinner. Like a salad and a protein shake. I'd aim for filling on as few calories as possible.0 -
Depends on the mood I'm in!
Sometimes I'll go for a long enough run to give me enough calorie allowance to have a decent meal while other times, I'll just think of it as a once-in-a-while treat and eat as normal, then get back on track the next day ... which is something I did recently when I went to see Harry Potter and ended up with half a kilo of pick-and-mix sweets!!
Don't forget, if your aim is to lose weight then your calorie allowance on here is probably lower than your BMR, so just because you're over your weight loss allowance, doesn't mean you're over what you need when resting :-)
Besides, it doesn't hurt to have a little treat from time to time - it helps keep the cravings in check :-)0 -
I haven't had that exact thing happen, but in similar situations I do a lot of exercise in the evening to balance it out.0

I would lift lots of heavy stuff and get a modest calorie burn but create some stimulus for muscle growth. Then I would eat a massive dinner full of fibrous veggies a decent amount of protein. (but still relatively low cal) Something like scrambled eggs with tuna/veggies.0

I would say, well, I had a great lunch with my daughter, I have lost 44lbs already, am healthier than ever and move on. I would continue my day as normal (if you do not eat or just eat really low cal then your matabolism will slow down)
Hold your head up, cut your losses and move on. I actually have this theory (and it is probably crap, but for me it makes sense and seems to be working) Every now and then you NEED to trick your body and vary from your cals and normal eating habits. If it gets used to the same old every single day, it is not going to work to its maximum abilities.
Personally, one day a week I do not log. I generally stick to my normal healthy diet plan, BUT for 1 meal or so I eat whatever I want without even looking or caring what is on the nutrition labels! If you feel guilty or off about enjoying a nice yummy meal out on rare occasion , then you are not having quality of life as well!0 -
Have a normal dinner - nothing huge, just what you would normally have Like you said, what's done is done. The best thing you can do is get back on track with your next meal. One splurge meal with your daughter won't throw you off track. As far as exercise goes, just keep on with your normal schedule.

I will agree here. I went over my cals by 800 last night. Not something I do at all on the norm, but hubby wanted a milk shake and I just wanted one so bad! It's gonna have to last me a while, that fix, cuz I am not doing it again !! Just dust off and move on.0 -
When I find I'm over calories I either go work them off or make smart decisions the rest of the day and get back to it the next day without fretting0

Well workout so that you can have a modest dinner. . .. or at least lower the amount that you went over and then know that tomorrow is a new day. . . This is not something you are planning to do everyday. . So it happens. . . just move forward. . .0

Wow... I would take notes for next time, and I would eat as healthily as possible and barely enough to fill me up0
-
You said your daughter is home from college for a few days. Just take it as a celebratory lunch that is perfectly okay. Special occasions are no biggie!0
-
Here is what I would do:
I would eat a normal dinner like you had probably already planned, and then do my best to make sure my net calories for the week were still at or under my goal by the end of the week. If your carton of eggs has a broken one, no sense in breaking the rest of them intentionally too. And I probably wouldn't workout unless I had already planned on doing so today.0 -
Try to remember that it is only one day and not let it get you down, but if you are really worried about it then add in some exercise, eat a super healthy modest dinner and drink plenty of fluids. Remember tomorrow is a fresh start.0

if you are hungry then eat. everyday will not be a perfect day. heck it might trick ur body and make you lose weight. one day at a time. dont beat urself up. drink lots of water and enjoy ur daughter being home.0

In order to keep your body running efficiently, you need to take in "normal" calories throughout the day.( I regularly go over my calorie counts.) Tomorrow is a new day. It's about balance, as far as I'm concerned. Eat a modest dinner. Enjoy the celebration that you had with your daughter. I think that dining with those you love SHOULD be a pleasure, not something to feel bad about. I don't believe in following calories so closely as to deliberately starve.0

EVERYONE ON THIS THREAD IS. . .
Spot on.
But I have one small thing to add.
This happens to me sometimes. Normally it's late at night and I'm starved (in the fat American sense of the word--not the actual meaning!). I'll make the call: Go over X number of calories so I can make it through this craving without binging. Normally it's like 100-300 calories over. Then I just go ahead and record the calories, then see how much over I am, then do a quick add calories of that amount to the next day. Meaning that if I go over by 184 calories, then I go to tomorrow's record and do a quick add of 184 calories to my breakfast. Essentially, I borrow from tomorrow's calories to pay for today's.
In no way do I suggest doing this with a large number of calories or you'll get into binging and starving, but this method keeps me under the limit over a 48 hour period, even if one 24 hour period is over.
After posting this the first time, I noticed that lclarkjr gave a similar suggestion. He was first, so this method will be known as "Clark's Calorie Counting" and NOT "Missionman's Method." :-)0 -
It's one day. Don't sweat it. Just eat a light dinner, and maybe a light breakfast... but don't starve yourself.
Repeat after me: It's just one day.0 -
i'd try to have a very healthy dinner, enough so i'm not waking hungry in the night though... probably a big salad with a bit of fish, shrimp, crab or very lean meat....
Then id be sure i take the time for a good walk ...
And then i'd just live with it... like many said it's just one day!
trying to loose weight is not a punishement...
We only have 1 life to live! Enjoy !
i'm sure you'll do better tomorow0 -
Yes, I would eat a modest dinner and realize that it's good to induldge sometimes. This will ultimately not hurt your efforts.0
