Workout program for the overthinker...

As mentioned in a post on the weight loss board, I just got put on lexapro for anxiety... I have some health issues creeping up on me that scare me quite frankly. I'm a 38 year old male.
I am the type that if I have something set out in front of me that is tested, tried and true, I don't stress it. This holds true to exercise. So for example, I'll run, do insanity, etc. However, in the weight room, I always second guess myself... I did strong lifts and enjoyed at the time. However with my goal of losing weight and holding on to as much muscle as I can, I realized it took a while for that program to get challenging and it didnt seem to give me a "full" workout feel. I have googled so many programs that my head is spinning and was hoping one of my mfp friends could recommend one that is tried and true for weight loss and recomp. I will be doing cardio during the process as well. I have nearly 50 pounds to lose. Any thoughts? Thanks!

i don't think anxiety is my thing, but i'm a similar kind of super-analyzer. i vacillate between liking extremely simple just-don't-think-about-it stuff, and wanting something i can really devote tons of mental time to getting used to and figuring out.
my lifting programmes were : stronglifts 5x5 to start with, complexity and analysis-fodder from mark rippetoe's book starting strength. and then when i was starting to dread and resent those workouts, my trainer suggested wendler 5/3/1, which was perfect. i think he got tired of me sulking and having little personal tantrums in his gym space
after about 8 months on wendler i independently added my own complexity by deciding i was going to experiment with the principles of his boring-but-big variation. along the way i've just kind of let random little side-projects occur to me and get me interested as they came up organically. i basically do things that interest me and don't even try to 'motivate' myself into stuff that i can't see or understand the point of.
so that's me.0 -
I try to play sports. Look into that.
I've also heard of a lot of people getting off meds the more exercise they put in. So maybe you have that boon to look forward to2 -
Try this one: http://outalpha.com/the-out-alpha-novice-program/

The powerlifting program I'm running right now is from the Reddit Fitness page. It's called 2-Suns 5/3/1 LP. It's a five-day split-body routine (Day 1 is upper body, Day 2 lower body, etc). It will challenge you quite a bit (two lifts a day, 17 sets total), but it will absolutely make you strong if you stick with it. You can find the spreadsheet at
