Wine Drinkers

For those of you that enjoy a glass of wine with dinner, do you substitute for something else? I'm having a hard time incorporating alcohol into my 1,200 calorie per day allotment.

Maybe you need a higher calorie allotment. Did mfp give you that?

1200 cals is super low - are you sure that's necessary?
I would not be able to fit in any alcohol at 1200. I aim for 1500-1600 when I am trying to lose a little, and I can fit in a glass of wine or a beer a couple of times a week.2 -
I worked out how many calories were in my favorite tipple then just make sure i burn the extra cal's so i can have it.
That way you still have your 1,200 calories for food.0 -
I just log it. I'm on 1200 a day, but try to only drink on the weekends. It's humbling when you log in 20 oz of Cab!0

Measure a true portion of a very dry Cabernet or Pinot Noir since those are still being debated as aiding in weight loss... but definitely have general health benefits in having 1 glass per day.
Although, I used to love buying and drinking a menagerie of red wines with dinner every night... now I save it for once weekly or less. If you want to make it easy, "Skinny Girl" Cabernet is 100 Calories for 1 glass and tastes fine for a cheap (maybe $20?) wine. But most dry Cabs and Pinot Noir can be found at around 120 to 170 Calories if you prefer better brands.
Merlots, Red Blends, and sometimes Malbecs (one of my favs) tend to be higher calories 200+ and higher sugar. But an expensive, woodsy Malbec *can* be low cal and delicious if you search vigilantly.
Whites and Blushes are usually high, too. I personally don't drink them, but if you like a refreshing, Summer treat... try a bottle of "Hugg" Elderflower Sparkling White Wine. It's delicious over ice with fresh mint and I think about 180 calories for a decent sized glass. I just shared a bottle with my Mom over the 4th of July since we were hosting and she enjoyed it, despite not liking alcohol in general.0 -
For mixed drink alternatives, I buy "Art of Naturals" Organic Sage or Rhubarb liquor. It's about 65 calories per ounce (and very strong) and just avoid juices and mixers. I use a fruit flavored 0 calorie sparkling water with muddled Summer berries and lime (delicious, stiff drink) and can sometimes have a few if I have 200 calories (or more) leftover.
A regular Vodka with all of the above is low cal, too. Regular Club Soda and Diet Tonic water are 0 calorie, too. The muddled fruits are a much tastier mixer, too.
Avoid any "darks" and "liqueurs" if you're going low cal/more bang for your buck. Whiskey, Tequila, Dark Rum, Amaretto, Chambord, etc. For things like a Strawberry Daiquiri that require Rum... use a White Rum, fresh strawberries, and instead of Sour Mix... use fresh lemons to blend, instead.
Rum & Coke = White Rum + Diet Coke/Pepsi
And learn your Saké and start trying out *cold* versions at home. The difference types make a huge calorie difference (Junmai vs Nigori for example)... but some are crazy low at 75 calories for 6oz! That's A LOT of Saké. I like Moonstone Asian Pear for a low cal, fruity one. They're a delicious alternative to mixed drinks or wine.
Annnnnnd... I'm done.0 -
Its my sons birthday this weekend so BBQ with friends = lots of alcohol so i have been saving up all my exercise calories from the week and keeping a few 100 normal cals back (not so hard on 1,800 a day) that way i have a bit of room for drinks .
I know ill probably still go way over as it starts a 4pm and we all stay up to watch the dawn at 4.30 am but life is for living and i will try and smash the gym extra hard next week.
I tend to stick to light beer about 120 a can and vodka strait.0
